This thesis discusses the efforts toward the total synthesis of sphinxolide; specifically, it focuses on the synthesis of the Joint, East, and South fragments of the molecule which comprise the side chain and the bottom half of sphinxolide. This compound has been shown to possesses potent activity against several cell lines of human carcinoma including several drug resisitant cancer cell lines. Due to the low natural abundance of this molecule, a total synthesis of sphinxolide is necessary for further biological testing on the title compound. Efforts toward the total synthesis of the molecule have been made and will be discussed within which include synthesis of the East fragment, Joint fragment, and progress toward the South fragment.
