The Catholic Hour. The CATHOLIC HOUR RT. REV. MSGR. FULTON J. SHEEN Speaker: Dec. 15, 1940 to April 13, 1941 Each Sunday at Six, E.S.T. JA'I Ty T. REV. MSGR. FULTON J. SHEEN will return to the Catholic Hour for his eleventh annual series of addresses, taking up where he left off last spring, with what proved to be the most popular series of religious broadcasts ever made. This 1940 series was one of the epochal events in the history of Catholic apologetics in the United States, and a definite "first” in religious radio. Nearly a third of a million let- ters were received from members of the radio audience during the 13 -week period. Imme- diately thereafter Dr. Stanley High, prominent Protestant spokesman, wrote that Monsignor Sheen is "the best-known exponent of Cathol- icism to non-Catholic Americans”; and The Living Church , weekly periodical of the Prot- estant Episcopal Church, in reviewing the 1940 series, said: "Monsignor Sheen is salutary and inspiring . . . keen discriminations again and again help to lessen our facile dependence on unanalyzed slogans. . . . Incidentally, one welcomes the spirited and enlightened defense of the Taylor appointment to the Vatican, against the foolish Protestant assertion that the separation of Church and State is endangered thereby.” When a semi-official spokesman of the Prot- estant Church and an official organ of the Protestant Church can be led to such state- ments, the Catholic Hour has indeed achieved its purpose; that is, in the words of F. J. Sheed’s definition of the New Apologetic, "not ... to prove other people wrong, nor even to prove Catholicism right, but simply to render it in- telligible.” Monsignor Sheen is well known as the priest who instructed Horace Mann, Heywood Broun, and many others.
