T h e t e n t a t i v e a n n o u n c e m e n t of a R a r e B o o k s S e m i n a r p l a n n e d as a p r e - c o n f e r e n c e activity in c o n n e c t i o n with A L A ' s W a s h i n g t o n C o n f e r e n c e in 1959 was well received. I n f o r m a t i v e a n d i n t e r e s t i n g p a n e l pro- g r a m s were p r e s e n t e d at the U n i v e r s i t y Li- b r a r i e s Section's p r o g r a m a n d at the meet- i n g of the T e a c h e r E d u c a t i o n L i b r a r i e s S e c t i o n . It is a g r e a t boost, also, to know that the won- d e r f u l s u p p o r t of o u r p r o g r a m by the U n i t e d States Steel F o u n d a t i o n is a t t r a c t i n g the s u p p o r t of other c o r p o r a t i o n s t o o . " T h e 1958 p r o g r a m will b e q u i t e similar to the g r a n t s p r o g r a m s of the last three years. It will emphasize sub-grants to fill n e e d s f o r books a n d periodicals. T h e inter- ests of the new d o n o r s to the p r o g r a m sug- gest that at least three g r a n t s will be m a d e in the g e n e r a l subject a r e a of communica- tions a n d two in the field of business ad- m i n i s t r a t i o n . W i t h i n the established policies of the reorganized ALA the administra- tion of this project devolves u p o n A C R L . Paul H . Bixler, librarian of Antioch College, Yellow Springs, Ohio, has been appointed library adviser for the Uni- versity of Rangoon Social Sciences Li- brary. H e arrived in Burma August 11 and will be there approximately two years. H e is accompanied by his wife and his youngest son, Mark. "Recognizing that an adequate li- brary," states the M e m o r a n d u m of Agreement between the University of Rangoon and the American Library As- sociation, "is essential for the system of instruction planned in the new Faculty [of Social Sciences], [the] University de- sires to establish a modern, working li- brary which would be a part of the Fac- ulty." Mr. Bixler will work closely with University of Rangoon officials and fac- ulty in the establishment of the library. Mr. Bixler will organize the library, advise on the selection of books and other materials, and provide in-service training for the Burmese staff. I n the course of the project three professional members of the library's staff will be trained abroad. It is expected that ap- proximately 9,000 books will be selected for the library. These will be added to approximately 16,000 already available for its collections. Mr. Bixler will direct also the purchase of e q u i p m e n t for the new library. H e will receive logistic sup- port from the headquarters office of ACRL.
