College and Research Libraries By C O N S T A N C E M. W I N C H E L L Selected Reference Books of 1957-1958 INTRODUCTION LIKE the preceding articles in this semi-i annual series1 this survey is based on notes written by members of the staff of the Columbia University Libraries. Notes written by assistants are signed with in- itials.2 As the purpose of the list is to present a selection of recent scholarly and for- eign works of interest to reference work- ers in university libraries, it does not pretend to be either well-balanced or comprehensive. Code numbers (such as A l l , 1A26, 2S22) have been used to re- fer to titles in the Guide3 and its Supple- ments. M A N U A L S Sabor, Josefa Emilia. T h i s is a new m a n u a l a n d g u i d e in Span- ish to certain special types of reference mate- rials. A f t e r a general introduction on the theory of reference work a n d the bibliog- raphies p e r t a i n i n g thereto, there follow chapters on encyclopedias, dictionaries, na- tional bibliographies, bibliographies of peri- odicals a n d government documents, bio- graphical dictionaries, a n d statistical annuals. F o r the most p a r t each section deals with the works of S p a i n , L a t i n America, France, Italy, G r e a t B r i t a i n , Germany, Portugal, a n d 1CRL, January and July issues starting January, 1952. 2 Reference: Elizabeth Bryce, Eleanor Buist, Eliza- beth Rumics, Eugene Sheehy, John Neal Waddell, Suzanne F. A n a p p e n d i x lists reference works d e a l i n g especially with some, b u t not all, L a t i n American countries. T h e selection is of basic works, the an- notations are descriptive a n d critical, a n d the whole seems to have been well p l a n n e d a n d carefully done. Staveley, Ronald, ed. C o n t r i b u t e d by a dozen specialists, the pa- pers in this v o l u m e treat a n u m b e r of the problems inherent in locating u n p u b l i s h e d a n d other research material not easily acces- sible. Science, technology, a n d the social sci- ences are the categories considered. A l t h o u g h the orientation is primarily British, atten- tion is p a i d also to American a n d interna- tional materials. In addition to analyses of existing sources, with some suggestions f o r mor e efficient use of them, there are a num- ber of practical proposals for the improve- ment of b i b l i o g r a p h i c control in the area. As a h a n d b o o k , however, the work is weak- ened by inconsistency of organization a n d the lack of either a g o o d subject index or a topical table of c o n t e n t s . — J . N . W . " T h e " B " g r o u p consists of those periodicals which serve mor e specialized re- search purposes. T h e division is intended to reflect a difference of content rather than of quality a m o n g the periodicals. T h e com- pilers consider that, for Germany, two cop- ies of titles in the " B " list should suffice. T h e y also p o i n t out that the list as a whole is a first a t t e m p t at a critical selection of the most i m p o r t a n t of the world's periodical lit- erature. T h e classified arrangement is that of the p l a n for acquisitions in special fields (Sondersammelgebietsplan) of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft. S u p p l e m e n t s are p l a n n e d . T h e work would be improved by a table of contents summarizing the classifica- tion a n d by a chart for symbols whose mean- ing must be pried from the introduction. Oxford, Clarendon Press, 1957. xlv, 833p. $16.80. T h e first edition of this standard diction- ary of Old Icelandic was published in 1874, after many vicissitudes. Started by R i c h a r d Cleasby, who was assisted by various Iceland- ic scholars, it was continued and brought to completion after his death by G u d b r a n d Vigfusson. T h i s new edition is a lithographic reprint of the earlier one, with the addition of a fifty-two page supplement compiled by Sir William Craigie. T h e lengthy introduc- tion and biographical sketch of Cleasby are omitted to make room for the supplement, but the section on grammar is included. It is a real advantage to have a modern printing of this dictionary covering this classical language which has been preserved in its purest form in Iceland. A N T H R O P O L O G Y Comas, J u a n . Several less active bodies are also treated, although more briefly. T h e first half of the volume is con- cerned with the history, charters, programs, etc., of the respective organizations, includ- ing lists of meetings, officers, committees and research projects. T h e second part of the work is a classified subject bibliography of some 3,000 papers which have been pub- lished in the reports of the more important congresses. T h e introduction provides an historical- bibliographical survey of German-language Hochschulschrijten in the theater arts, a geographical section lists works about the theater in various countries, a n d an histor- ical-geographical section gives a listing of works about particular periods, subdivided by countries. In general, indexing includes 1953- 56, though slightly longer or shorter periods are sometimes covered. Articles are entered under both author and subject. T h e division of the work into two parts (I, Articles; II, Illustrations) makes for a great duplication of entries, but allows for a somewhat closer analysis of the illustrations.
