S E T T O N , who returns to the University of Pennsylvania as director of libraries, is a well-known medieval scholar. H e was born in New Bedford in 1914 a n d received his A.B. from Boston Univer- sity, did graduate work at Chicago a n d H a r v a r d , a n d re- ceived the doctorate from Columbia. H e has been an instruc- tor of classics a n d history at Boston University; associate professor of Europe- an history at the University of M a n i t o b a a n d chairman of the d e p a r t m e n t there; a n d H e n r y C. Lea Associate Professor of Medie- val History a n d Curator of the Lea Library at the University of Pennsylvania. H e has taught also at Bryn Mawr. D u r i n g the past year he was professor of history at Colum- bia, from which post he goes back to Penn- sylvania. Professor Setton is the a u t h o r of several books, including his study of Cata- lonian expansion in the Eastern Mediter- ranean, a n d a n u m b e r of notable articles a n d papers on Byzantine history. H e is a member of the advisory board of Speculum a n d has considerable editorial experience as editor-in-chief of the Pennsylvania His- tory of the Crusades, now in process of pub- lication by the University of Pennsylvania a n d the Medieval Academy of America. Mr. Setton is an experienced librarian through his connection with the Lea Library. H e is a bibliophile o£ many years' standing. Mr. Setton has delivered numerous papers at meetings of learned societies. These papers combine precision a n d detail with b r e a d t h of understanding, and, what is even more unusual at a learned society, h u m o r . Necrology H E N R Y E V E L Y N B L I S S , a u t h o r of A Biblio- graphic Classification a n d o t h e r works on li- b r a r y classification p u b l i s h e d by t h e H . W . W i l s o n C o m p a n y , d i e d on A u g u s t 9, 1955, a f t e r a slight illness at his h o m e in Plain- field, N . J . O n e of A m e r i c a ' s f o r e m o s t con- t r i b u t o r s to t h e systemizing of b i b l i o g r a p h i c classification, h e was 85 years old. M r . Bliss, w h o r e t i r e d in 1940 as associate l i b r a r i a n of t h e College of t h e City of N e w York, h a d b e e n associated w i t h t h a t institu- t i o n since 1891. T h e b i b l i o g r a p h i c organiza- t i o n of k n o w l e d g e , a study to w h i c h h e de- v o t e d m o r e t h a n 50 years, first e n g a g e d his a t t e n t i o n a b o u t 1900 w h e n h e f o u n d t h a t t h e classification system used by t h e City College l i b r a r y was i n a d e q u a t e f o r classify- i n g t h e r a p i d l y d e v e l o p i n g fields of science, social science, technology, l i t e r a t u r e , a n d o t h e r subjects. H i s n e w classification system—by w h i c h t h e City College library was r e o r g a n i z e d in 1905-1908—endeavored to systematize all b r a n c h e s of k n o w l e d g e a n d study in accord- a n c e w i t h t h e consensus of m o d e r n scientific a n d e d u c a t i o n a l t h o u g h t . H e r e a s o n e d t h a t t h e r e a d e r a n d t h e r e s e a r c h e r a r e best served by a classification w h i c h places in p r o x i m i t y t h e s u b j e c t m a t t e r s t h a t a r e most likely to be w a n t e d t o g e t h e r (the p r i n c i p l e h e called " c o l l o c a t i o n f o r m a x i m a l efficiency"); w h i c h g r o u p s smaller, r e l a t e d subjects u n d e r t h e r e l e v a n t , m o r e g e n e r a l subjects ( " s u b o r d i n a - t i o n " ) ; a n d w h i c h p r o v i d e s f o r revision ac- c o r d i n g to changes o r n e w d e v e l o p m e n t s in various s u b j e c t m a t t e r s ( " a d a p t a b i l i t y " ) . H i s i n t r o d u c t o r y v o l u m e , The Organiza- tion of Knowledge and the System of the Sciences ( i n t r o d u c e d by J o h n Dewey in 1929 as a " m o n u m e n t a l w o r k " a n d a n i m p o r t a n t c o n t r i b u t i o n to t h e u n i f i c a t i o n of knowl- edge), was followed by The Organization of JANUARY, 1956 93- Knowledge in Libraries and the Subject- Approach to Books (1933) a n d A Biblio- graphic Classification (a f o u r - v o l u m e w o r k c o m p l e t e d early in 1953). A l t h o u g h t h e Bliss classification has b e e n a d o p t e d by o n l y a few l i b r a r i e s in t h e U n i t e d States, it h a s influ- e n c e d A m e r i c a n t h i n k i n g o n classification. I t also e n j o y s a c o n s i d e r a b l e r e p u t a t i o n in B r i t a i n a n d t h e B r i t i s h C o m m o n w e a l t h na- tions, w h e r e it is in use in a b o u t 60 libraries. I n t h e last years of his life, i n a d d i t i o n to o t h e r activities, M r . Bliss p l a n n e d ( a n d edit- e d t h e first t h r e e n u m b e r s of) t h e Bliss Clas- sification Bulletin, a n occasional m i m e o - g r a p h e d p u b l i c a t i o n d e s i g n e d to k e e p his system of classification u p to d a t e . H e was a m e m b e r of t h e Special L i b r a r i e s Association, L i b r a r y Association of t h e U n i t e d K i n g d o m , a n d t h e (British) P o e t r y Society. H i s writ- ings i n c l u d e a b o o k of p o e m s , Better Late than Never, p u b l i s h e d by G. P. P u t n a m ' s Sons, in 1937. F u l l e r was h e a d of t h e R e f e r e n c e D e p a r t - m e n t a n d research asso- ciate at t h e Yale U n i - versity L i b r a r y in N e w H a v e n . H e received his B.A. d e g r e e in 1935, his M.A. in 1947, b o t h f r o m Yale, a n d a n M.S. in L i b r a r y Service f r o m C o l u m b i a U n i v e r s i t y i n 1950. H e j o i n e d t h e Yale l i b r a r y staff in 1937 a f t e r t e a c h i n g f o r two years in a p r i v a t e school. H e t a u g h t o n e s u m m e r at T e a c h e r s College. M r . F u l l e r was very active in p r o f e s s i o n a l g r o u p s in his o w n l i b r a r y a n d at t h e t i m e of his d e a t h h e was c h a i r m a n of t h e W i l s o n C o m m i t t e e o n t h e International Index. H e h a d also b e e n C h a i r m a n of t h e A C R L Com- m i t t e e o n I n t e r - L i b r a r y L o a n s .
