T o the A m e r i c a n o b s e r v e r the p a r t i c u l a r inter- est of the publication lies in the m a n n e r in w h i c h a continental m u s e u m has visualized and presented the interrelationship of the p r i - vate press m o v e m e n t in E n g l a n d and A m e r i c a , and w h i c h presses and personalities have been selected as p a r t i c u l a r l y significant. A n excellent v i e w of the f u r t h e r d e v e l o p - m e n t of these c o n n e c t i o n s , and a first rate biographical d o c u m e n t a b o u t the dean of A m e r i c a n b o o k designers is B r u c e R o g e r s ' PI. M u c h of the personal history of R o g e r s , w h o is n o w in his eighties, is a living d e m o n s t r a - tion of A n g l o - A m e r i c a n relations. H i s w o r k f o r the university presses of O x f o r d and C a m b r i d g e , his close c o n t a c t w i t h the English M o n o t y p e C o r p o r a t i o n and his l o n g friendship w i t h leading British b o o k m e n ( a m o n g them S h a w and L a w r e n c e of A r a b i a ) find c o l o r f u l reflection in the pages of PI. T h e m e n he speaks o f , incidentally, are of a d i f f e r e n t g r o u p and another g e n e r a t i o n f r o m those m e n t i o n e d by P o w e l l in his Alchemy, w h i c h only g o e s to p r o v e that these c o n n e c t i o n s transcend the p e r s o n a l and the accidental. B u t w e read also much about s o m e of the g r e a t figures in the w o r l d of b o o k s and printing on this side of the A t l a n t i c . H e n r y W a t s o n K e n t , F r e d G o u d y , W i l l i a m E d w i n R u d g e , F r e d e r i c W a r d e — h e r e are some of the names of men no l o n g e r with us w h o c o m e to l i f e here. A g o o d many of the pieces included in this " H o d g e - P o d g e " have been published p r e v i - ously and s o m e of them w i l l be f a m i l i a r to some, and o t h e r s to others. B u t their c o l - lected presentation in c h r o n o l o g i c a l o r d e r gives this PI the quality of an i m p o r t a n t b i o g r a p h i - cal c o n t r i b u t i o n a b o u t one of the g r e a t A m e r i c a n s of the twentieth century. H i s c o m m e n t a r y on his o w n w o r k is a l w a y s w o r t h reading and one only regrets that c i r c u m - stances have m a d e B R m u c h m o r e articulate about the p r o d u c t s of his middle and later years ( t h e H o m e r , the Shakespeare, the t w o B i b l e s ) than a b o u t m u c h of his equally sig- nificant earlier w o r k in b o o k design. T h e p r o s e of B r u c e R o g e r s is s o m e t h i n g special and rare in its s e l f - s a t i r i c a l h u m o r , its o c c a s i o n a l deliberate archaisms, in its use of the gentle p u n — b u t a b o v e all in the c a r e f u l choice of w o r d s and the sensitive and d i g n i - fied phrasing. B u t w h a t else c o u l d one expect f r o m the man w h o o n c e w r o t e the f o l l o w i n g (to the editor of the Saturday Review, Oc- t o b e r 29, 1 9 2 7 ) : T h e press holds up a mirror to the author in which he may see himself clearly. If the paper, type, and composition are carefully chosen and harmonious, the author sees his work in a new guise. He may feel keen pride or shame. He hears a firmer, more detached voice than his o w n — a n implacably just voice—articulating his words. E v e r y - thing weak, trivial, arbitrary, or in bad taste that he has written is pointed up and comes out in clear relief. O n the o t h e r hand, such w o r k s as W i n c h e l l and M a l c l e s are w e l c o m e as additional t o o l s f o r the r e f e r - ence librarian in c o u n t r i e s w h e r e l a n g u a g e s o t h e r than English and F r e n c h are spoken. The Handbuch der bibliographischen Nach- schlagewerki ( F r a n k f u r t on the M a i n , V i t - t o r i o K l o s t e r m a n n , 1 9 5 4 ; 258 p . ; D M 2 1 . 5 0 ) by W i l h e l m T o t o k and R o l f W e i t z e l is not as extensive as W i n c h e l l and M a l c l e s ; but it contains a t h o u g h t f u l selection of titles and both serves the purposes of the G e r m a n l i - b r a r i a n and amplifies W i n c h e l l f o r the English-speaking librarian. T i t l e s are a r r a n g e d in classified o r d e r w i t h brief i n t r o d u c t o r y essays p r e c e d i n g each m a j o r section. E n t r i e s f o l l o w the Prussian In- struktion, and f u l l y adequate b i b l i o g r a p h i c a l i n f o r m a t i o n is p r o v i d e d . W h e n e v e r necessary there is a brief annotation, but all such an- notations are confined t o essential i n f o r m a t i o n . C r i t i c a l c o m m e n t is c a r e f u l l y a v o i d e d , and the user must turn t o o t h e r sources f o r evaluation of the v a r i o u s w o r k included. T h e r e is an a u t h o r , title, and s u b j e c t index, the latter confined to an index of the classification and c o u n t r i e s ( w i t h pertinent subjects listed u n d e r each c o u n t r y ) . T h e r e is a high d e g r e e of a c c u r a c y in the r e c o r d i n g of f o r e i g n titles, an i m p o r t a n t e l e - m e n t in any checklist of r e f e r e n c e b o o k s . A p a r t i c u l a r l y at- tractive f e a t u r e is the adequate c o v e r a g e of Slavic materials, although there is s o m e r o o m f o r expansion in the field of H i s p a n i c studies. A r e g u l a r supplement such as that f o r W i n - chell w o u l d be u s e f u l . T h e second fascicle of the Bibliographie historischer Zeitschriften, 1939-1951 ( M a r - b u r g L a h n , O t t o R a s c h , 1953 ; 221 p . ) c o m p i l e d by H e i n r i c h K r a m m f o r the W e s t d e u t s c h e Bibliothek c o v e r s historical periodicals in the British Isles, the L o w C o u n t r i e s ( i n - cluding L u x e m b o u r g ) , F r a n c e , P o r t u g a l , Spain, and Italy. T h e first fascicle c o v e r e d G e r m a n y , S w i t z e r l a n d , and A u s t r i a . T h i s bibliography included periodicals c u r r e n t in 1939 ( w i t h subsequent title changes indi- c a t e d ) as w e l l as n e w ones. G e n e r a l p e r i - odicals are g r o u p e d in classifications, and local historical j o u r n a l s are a r r a n g e d alphabetically by t e r r i t o r y c o v e r e d . T h e r e is an alphabetical index. T h e truly m o n u m e n t a l p r o j e c t u n d e r w a y at the W e s t d e u t s c h e Bibliothek is the n e w edition of the Gesamtverzeichnis der aus- landischen Zeitschriften ( G A Z ) , of which the checking copies are n o w being c i r c u l a t e d in fascicles t h r o u g h o u t W e s t G e r m a n y . W h e n this g r e a t w o r k is c o m p l e t e it w i l l p r o v e t o be invaluable to serials w o r k e r s e v e r y w h e r e f o r acquisition, cataloging, and r e f e r e n c e p u r - poses. E v e n though it w i l l be a union c a t a l o g f o r W e s t G e r m a n libraries only, it w i l l fill many needs created by the lack of a n e w Union List of Serials in a single alphabet. As T o t o k and W e i t z e l point out, a p a r t i c u l a r l y u r g e n t need is a n e w edition of the old Gesamt-Zeitschriften-Verzeichnis ( G Z V ) of 1914, o r at least of the list of G e r m a n peri- odicals contained in it. T h e unusual vitality of W e s t G e r m a n librarianship may w e l l bring this need to reality. In 1951 the M a x H e t t l e r B u c h b i n d e r - V e r - l a g in Stuttgart published E r n s t K y r i s s ' V er- zierte gotische Einbande im alten deutschen Sprachgebeit (159 p.) incorporating the re- sults of a l i f e - t i m e of study of this i m p o r t a n t aspect of the history of the b o o k . O n e r e - v i e w e r criticized the b o o k f o r not being il- lustrated. A c t u a l l y M r . H e t t l e r deserved the only the g r a t i t u d e of scholars f o r having been w i l l i n g to u n d e r t a k e any publication at all in such a relatively specialized f i e l d ; but he did plan t w o additional v o l u m e s of illustrations at intervals of t w o o r three years. T h e first v o l u m e of illustrations appeared late in 1953 ( i 8 5 p . , incl. 152 p l a t e s ) and c o v e r s the first three parts of the text v o l u m e ( b i n d i n g s identified w i t h monasteries, w i t h binders k n o w n by name, and w i t h initials o r a r m o r i a l b e a r i n g s ) . I l l u s t r a t i o n s f o r the final and largest part of the text v o l u m e s , listing the w o r k of unidentified binders, w i l l appear in the last v o l u m e . T h i s first v o l u m e of illustrations is e v e r y - thing that a student of binding c o u l d hope f o r . N o publisher could u n d e r t a k e to r e p r o - duce all of the 7,000 different stamps w h i c h K y r i s s identified ( a l t h o u g h publication on m i c r o c a r d might be feasible, since rubbings and p h o t o g r a p h s of bindings s h o w up quite w e l l in this m e d i u m ) . T h e r e f o r e only the most f r e q u e n t l y used stamps w e r e r e p r o d u c e d and they w e r e n u m b e r e d a c c o r d i n g to the f r e q u e n c y of their appearance. A f e w other unusual stamps are r e p r o d u c e d and are d e s i g - nated by letter. T h e 748 stamps w h i c h appear in this v o l u m e make it possible to identify v i r t u a l l y all the bindings w h i c h m a y f a l l into the c a t e g o r i e s c o v e r e d by the first three sections of the text v o l u m e . A l l stamps are r e p r o - duced in their original size. F o r nearly every g r o u p there is a f u l l page illustration of one c o v e r w i t h the name of the library, the call n u m b e r s , and the size in millimeters. A f e w c o v e r s had to be selected f r o m private c o l - lections in v i e w of the rarity of w e l l p r e - served bindings, and in a f e w cases rubbings instead of p h o t o g r a p h s w e r e used. In the case of binderies identified f r o m b o o k s in libraries of P r a h a and O l o m o u c illustrations of f u l l c o v e r s w e r e unavailable. M a x H e t t l e r might w e l l be satisfied w i t h a profitable business in the publication of the Allgemeiner Anzeiger fiir Buchbindereien and practical m a n u a l s f o r binderies, but instead he has taken the initiative to publish w o r k s such as Verzierte gotische Einbande and a v a l u a b l e n e w series of " M e i s t e r und M e i s t e r - w e r k e der B u c h b i n d e r k u n s t " edited by G . A . E . B o g e n g . T h e first v o l u m e in the series w a s a study of J a k o b K r a u s e by Ilse Schunke, and the second is Bogeng's Emanuel Steiner ( 1 9 5 4 ; 63P., incl. 16 plates, each p o r t r a y i n g a separate binding by S t e i n e r ) . I t is g r a t i f y i n g to note that this v o l u m e , like the third v o l u m e of the L o f f l e r - K i r c h n e r Lexikon des gesamten Buchwesens, contains a classified index a r r a n g e d u n d e r t w e l v e m a j o r headings and n u m e r o u s sub-heads. L i k e the first v o l u m e , the second is c o n - siderably abbreviated by c o m p a r i s o n w i t h the L - Z section of L o f f l e r - K i r c h n e r . H o w e v e r , the s o m e 4,000 articles in K i r c h n e r ' s t w o v o l u m e s contain the same basic i n f o r m a t i o n that m a y be f o u n d in the o l d e r w o r k , and j u d i c i o u s use of the classified index facilitates the l o c a t i o n of i n f o r m a t i o n c o n s o l i d a t e d f r o m specific headings into m o r e general ones. K i r c h n e r ' s alertness and familiarity w i t h p r o f e s s i o n a l and technical literature is amply p r o v e n by bibliographical r e f e r e n c e t o a r - ticles and b o o k s that appeared in 1953. Basic bibliographical l i t e r a t u r e f r o m all l a n g u a g e s is c i t e d ; and if a captious reader is apt to cite an occasional omission, any such m i n o r d e - linquency ( t o w h i c h all bibliographers are s u b j e c t ) is relatively u n i m p o r t a n t . O n e c u r i o u s inconsistency w i l l surely cause a m i n o r titter at the next meeting of the A m h e r s t C o l l e g e b o a r d of t r u s t e e s : O n p. 253 ( v o l u m e I ) it is stated that H e n r y C l a y F o l g e r presented his c o l l e c t i o n to the L i b r a r y of C o n g r e s s , and on p. 715 ( v o l u m e I I ) it is stated that he presented it to the city of W a s h i n g t o n , D .
