College and Research Libraries B y A L P H O N S E F . T R E Z Z A Philadelphia, First A C R L Chapter Mr. Trezza, head of the Circulation De- partment, University of Pennsylvania Li- brary, is president of the Philadelphia Chap- ter of ACRL. IN J U N E OF 1 9 5 0 the Special Libraries Association f o r m a l l y dissolved its na- tional University and College group. M a n y of the local chapters of the Special L i b r a r y Association had active University and Col- lege groups and these local groups were faced with the serious problem of deciding what their f u t u r e would be. I n Philadel- phia, the University and College group ap- pointed a Reorganization Committee to con- sider its f u t u r e . T h e Committee sent out a questionnaire in A p r i l 1 9 5 1 with the fol- lowing five suggested courses of action and the implications of each: "i. Become an independent, local group. This would entail the development of a full program of meetings, projects, etc., as well as sufficient dues to finance the meet- ings, programs, etc. It would also mean the establishment of 'another library as- sociation.' "2. Affiliate with the Pennsylvania Library Association. Under the present constitution of P L A , there is no provision for a special interest group such as ours. P L A chapters are all geographical units.1 "3. Become a chapter of the Association of College & Reference Libraries. As there is no local chapter of A C R L here, this would entail development of a full program of meetings, projects, etc. Dues would be those of A L A membership, plus local chapter dues. Chapter member- ship would necessitate A L A membership.2 1 A c t u a l l y , P L A does have special interest sections, « including College and R e f e r e n c e . 2 I t w a s learned later that chapter membership does not necessitate A L A or national A C R L membership. "4. Continue as a Division of the Special Libraries Council of Philadelphia and Vicinity. As members of S L A or local members of the Council only, Division members would share fully in local S L A meetings and activities. Membership in such a local division would not affect the individual right to affiliate with other, national di- visions. Dues in addition to S L A mem- bership (local or national) would be neces- sary in order to finance a worthwhile pro- gram. "5. Disband." A meeting of the members of the U n i - versity and College group was held J u n e I , 1 9 5 1 , to consider the results of the ques- tionnaire. Forty-three per cent of the mem- bers answering the questionnaire voted in f a v o r of becoming a local chapter of A C R L , 26 per cent favored continuing as a division of the Special Libraries Council of Philadelphia, 1 6 per cent voted to dis- band altogether, and 1 5 per cent voted to affiliate with the Pennsylvania L i b r a r y As- sociation. I n accordance w i t h these results, the U n i - versity and College group dissolved as a section of S . L . C . A committee, comprised of C a r o l a Baus, the Reverend Daniel P . F a l v e y , O . S . A . , W a l t e r H a u s d o r f e r , and Alphonse F . T r e z z a , chairman, was then formed. O n J u l y 5, 1 9 5 1 , a letter was sent to all A C R L members in the Southeastern Pennsylvania, Southern N e w J e r s e y and D e l a w a r e areas requesting them to sign a petition f o r the formation of a regional chapter of A C R L . Seventy-five members signed such petitions which were, in turn, submitted to the A C R L Board of Directors in early October.
