TH E LIST of n e w p e r i o d i c a l s f o r the f i r s t half of 1 9 5 3 is brief. Since the same routine examination of new material re- ceived at the L i b r a r y of Congress was made as during preceding semiannual intervals it would seem that f e w e r journals are being launched. Of those promising to be valu- able hecause of subject and scholarly treat- ment, the majority came from American professional societies. Economics In the field of economics, more specifi- cally finance, investments and management some interesting new titles were found. T h e D a v i d L . Babson Company of Boston is i s s u i n g hivesting for Tomorrow f o r t h e purpose of discussing basic investment prin- ciples and current economic forces. It w i l l deal with market forecasts, price fluctua- tions and similar "unpredictables." The Journal of Industrial Economics, the f i r s t issue of which is dated November 1 9 5 2 , is published by B l a c k w e l l in O x f o r d , E n g l a n d under the direction of a board of editors made up of British and American university professors. Such topics as shortage of capi- tal, steel price policy and problems of busi- ness forecasting are discussed in the first issue. F r o m the Soviet zone of G e r m a n y there is being issued Die Material-Wirt- schaft which as its subtitle states is a " Z e i t - schrift f u r alle F r a g e n der M a t e r i a l w i r t - schaft in der Deutschen Demokratischen R e p u b l i k . " T h e principal article in volume one, number one is a discussion of the five year plan f o r East G e r m a n y . The National Biographic, a publication of the American Institute of Management, w i l l publish biog- raphies of successful business directors and managers. Richard Redwood Deupree, chairman of the board and president emeri- tus of Procter and Gamble Company is the subject of the first issue. Political Affairs Several new journals, European and American, dealing with national and in- ternational problems appeared. T w o from R o m e , ABC, Ouindicinale di Critica Poli- tico a n d Diplomazia, Rassegna per le Relazioni Internazionale deal with such matters as the military government of Trieste, the A r a b - J e w i s h question, the A t - lantic Pact, Eisenhower's foreign policy, etc. T h e political relations between Denmark and Greenland is the field of Grfinland, Tidsskrift for Dansk-Grnlandsk Samvirke. Mundo Internacional p u b l i s h e d in N e w Y o r k by the United Nations W o r l d deals largely with the people w h o are making the n e w s : " E i s e n h o w e r y Latinoamerica," " E l Misterioso E d e n , " " N e h r u y M a r x , " " S a l a z a r de P o r t u g a l " and others. Y u g o - slavian problems are the subject of News of Yugoslavia published in N e w Y o r k . T h i s publication is prepared by members of the Research and Publications Service of the National Committee f o r a F r e e Europe. I t w i l l not be an organ of editorial policy but w i l l report wherever possible with di- rect quotations and a minimum of commen- tary. T h e first issue reports on the sixth congress of the Communist P a r t y of Y u g o - 410 COLLEGE AND RESEARCH LIBRARIES slavia. In Nove Obzory, also published in N e w Y o r k , the Christian Democratic P a r t y of Czechoslovakia w i l l interpret Czecho- slovakian problems. Science U n d e r this broad heading are listed new journals in a variety of special fields. T h e American Federation for Clinical Research w i l l publish in its Clinical Research Pro- ceedings abstracts of papers submitted to national and sectional federation meetings. Also all reputable research societies and groups of scientists who are engaged in investigations in the field of clinical medi- cine are invited to send in abstracts for publication. T h e first issue treats of such subjects as the cardiovascular system, the central nervous system, endocrine glands and metabolism. A new publication in the field of geriatrics is the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society. I t w i l l p r e - sent studies of the causes, prevention and treatment of diseases of persons advancing in years. Applied Microbiology, under the sponsorship of the Society of American Bac- teriologists has as its purpose the publication of studies in the application of microbiologi- cal sciences to the fields of industry, foods, sanitation, agriculture and other areas in- volving the use or control of microorgan- isms, with the exception of the microbio- logical aspects of animal and plant disease. T o honor L i b e r t y H y d e Bailey, Cornell University entitled its new journal of horticultural taxonomy Baileya. T h i s pub- lication w i l l be concerned with the botany of cultivated plants and especially with their identification, nomenclature, classifi- cation, and history in cultivation. It w i l l be useful to nurserymen, seedsmen, serious ama- teurs and other persons genuinely interested in knowing more about the identification, naming and classification of cultivated plants. Articles on " A N a m e f o r the Christmas C a c t u s " and "Some M e x i c a n A m a r y l l i d s " illustrate the contents of the first number. Specialized and scholarly is the Journal of Histochemistry and Cyto- chemistry of the Histochemical Society. It w i l l contain original and review articles relating to the development and application of methods f o r the study of the chemistry of tissues and cells. Psychoanalysis and Hypnosis T h e Journal of the American Psychoan- alytic Association w i l l publish the official proceedings of the association as w e l l as the best available papers on psychoanalysis. T h e Journal of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis, the organ of the Society f o r Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis w i l l publish original research papers dealing with hypnosis in psychology, psychiatry, the medi- cal and dental specialties and allied areas of science. Nursing Another professional organization, the National L e a g u e f o r N u r s i n g launched Nursing Outlook. T h e purpose of this journal is the fostering of the development and improvement of nursing services and nursing education. Public health nursing, hospital nursing and industrial nursing are subjects treated in the J a n u a r y 1 9 5 3 issue. Com m unicatio n T h e Journal of the Audio Engineering Society w i l l publish papers on broadcast audio equipment, recording and reproduc- tion of sound and music and related sub- jects. T h e first issue includes articles on " A t t e n u a t o r T y p e s and their Application," "Attenuation E q u a l i z e r s , " " E l e c t r o l y t i c Capacitors" and many other equally tech- n i c a l s u b j e c t s . T h e Audio Visual Communi- cation Review published by the National Education Association w i l l deal with the OCTOBER, 1953 411 application of audio-visual methods to edu- cation. Included in the first issue are such articles as "Professionalizing the Audio- Visual F i e l d " and "Perception Research and A u d i o - V i s u a l E d u c a t i o n . " Bibliogra- phies accompany articles. Book reviews and abstracts of periodical articles are included. M usic T h e Journal of Research in Music Edu- cation is published by the M u s i c Educators National Conference. T h e first issue seems to f a v o r historical subjects and includes " T h e Study of M u s i c at the University of O x f o r d in the M i d d l e A g e s (to 1 4 5 0 ) , " " H i s t o r y of the F l u t e and its M u s i c in the U . S . " and " T h e E a s y Instructor ( 1 7 9 8 - 1 8 3 0 ) : A History and Bibliography of the F i r s t Shape N o t e T u n e B o o k . " Book re- views w i l l be included. Literature T h e only literary j o u r n a l examined f o r inclusion here is Idiom published in Passaic, N . J . , and edited by Charles G u l i c k . Its announcement brochure states: " M a n y con- scientious literary publications, scholarly re- views, 'little' magazines and fashion maga- zines publish modern short stories and verse. B u t there is one area of creative w r i t i n g . . . almost totally overlooked: that of the experi- mental w r i t e r . . . who is exploring new pos- sibilities of expression, f o r m and content; w h o is w o r k i n g in significant new 'idioms.' " Digests Another " d i g e s t " magazine has appeared, this time in the field of theology. Theology Digest published by St. M a r y ' s College, St. M a r y s , Kansas aims to keep priests, re- ligious, seminarians and laity informed of current problems and developments in theology by presenting a concise sampling of current periodical writings in theology. European items are included. Names T h e study of names, a subject seldom represented by a periodical publication is now to be treated in Names, journal of the American N a m e Society. T h e object of the society is the study of the etymology, origin, meaning, and application of all cate- gories of names—geographical, personal, scientific, commercial, popular—and the dissemination of the result of such study. A l s o the society w i l l act as a clearing house f o r American nomenclature and as an ad- visory agency f o r government offices, organi- zations, and individuals concerned with the application, changing, spelling and pronun- ciation of names. Printing and Graphic Arts Notes on Printing & Graphic Arts is a n interesting little quarterly edited by R o l l o G . Silver. T h e principal article in the first issue is an abstract of a lecture at D a r t - mouth College by G . W . O v i n k entitled " A f t e r A l l , W h a t Does 'Functional T y - pography' M e a n ? " A l s o included is a brief discussion on "Inscriptions in the G r a p h i c A r t s Department at H a r v a r d " and news notes on new and fine and rare edi- tions. Eye to Eye is the bulletin of the G r a p h i c H i s t o r y Society of America. T h i s society is an association of collectors, cus- todians, historians and others interested in collecting and publishing prints, paintings, photographs and other pictures f r o m the standpoint of the subjects which they repre- sent. T h e j o u r n a l w i l l disseminate descrip- tions of individual sources or collections, lists of known sources f o r pictures on par- ticular specialties, notes on individual sources, notes on specialties of contempo- rary photographers and notes on collections on the market or which present problems with respect to f u t u r e care.
