In the introduction to the newly published Catalogue o f the Witchcraft Collection in Cornell University L ibrary‚ which lists more than 3,000 books and pamphlets, author Rossell Hope Rob bins wrote th at nearly all m odern w riters on witchcraft have slighted or are ignorant o f the most important aspects of the collection. A leading authority on witchcraft, Robbins says modern authors concentrate on the writings in the collection by the classic demonologists and 57 devil worshipers. T he extremely rare and highly im p o rtant w orks o f a u th ors in o p p o sitio n to witchcraft, along with court records o f witchcraft trials, have gone largely untouched, he says. Robbins says the Cornell collection on witch craft is particularly important b ecause it deals strictly with the true meaning of witchcraft— that is, a C h ristian h e resy in w hich on e w illingly commits oneself to the work of the devil. Considered the world’s leading collection o f its type, it was developed nearly 100 years ago by the university’s first president, Andrew Dickson W hite. Many o f the works are from the sixteenth and seventeenth centu ries, a tim e when witch trials swept Christian Europe and America. Robbins says that the be lief in witchcraft was so widely held during this period that it’s a mira cle that there are any writings at all in opposition to it. But the Cornell collection contains works by more than h a lf a dozen such op p on en ts. T he catalog is available from KTO Press, Route 100, Milwood, NY 10546. • The 1977/78 Union List o f Health Sciences Serials o f the University o f Southern California (U SC ) N o rris M ed ica l L ib ra ry and the Los Angeles County/USC Medical C e n te r Libraries (general, women’s, and nursing) is now available. It is entitled T O W A R D A G E N E R A L T h e o r y o f C i r c u l a t i o n and was writ ten by R obert L. Burr, director o f libraries, Gon zaga University, Spokane, Washington. T his p ap er is a rep ort o f sev eral an alyses, primarily o f circulation data from the library of the C o lleg e o f W illiam and Mary in Virginia. Burr has found that regardless o f o th er factors (e.g., length o f loan period), the distribution of library books borrowed can be predicted on the basis of subject and type o f patron (student, fac ulty, others); the return of those books depends 58 also on how close to the library the borrowers live. Besides the presentation o f the data support ing these findings, there is also a description of the methodology used and of the practical appli cations of the general findings. The conclusions of this study differ from those of Buckland and his associates at the University of Lancaster.
