Deaths M a r y J a n e N e f f , head of the Periodicals D ep art ment at Em poria State University, Kansas, died af ter a three-year battle with cancer. She had serve at Em poria for 20 years. N e l s o n A. P i p e r , assistant university librarian for collections, died July 5. He joined the staff o University of California, Davis in 1956 as the assis tant head of the Acquisitions Departm ent. He be­ cam e head of the Departm ent in 1958 and was named the AUL for collections in 1962. W hen Piper arrived in 1956 the L ib rary had approxi­ mately 100,000 volumes; he leaves behind a collec­ tion in excess of 1,70 0 ,0 0 0 volumes. H o w a r d H . W i l l i a m s , re fe re n ce lib r a r ia n emeritus at Swarthmore College, Pennsylvania, died on July 6 while vacationing at Cape May. A graduate of Lake Forest College, he received his master’s degree in English at Columbia University and an M LS from Colum bia in 1948. He cam e to Swarthmore in 1949 as a reader’s services librarian, then from 1967 to his retirement in 1975 he was a reference librarian responsible for general refer­ ence, library instruction, and interlibrary loans. J o s e p h i n e W i l l i a m s , government documents li­ brarian at East Texas State University, Commerce, passed away May 25th after 20 years of library ser­ vice. ■ ■ * Alos Micrographics is now marketing a micro- filmer that weighs only 38 pounds and occupies less space than a typewriter. Designed to autom ate book acquisitions functions, the new Ba- TaSY ST E M S software provides a new generation of technological service that utilizes a library’s ex­ isting terminals. Three services will be introduced this year: the T itle Search and Order service, a Full Acquisitions System, and a T itle Confirm ation ser­ vice. The first two are operational now, and the third should be available on October 15. T itle Con­ firm ation is a package for personal computers that allows book orders to be keyed in by ISBN for toll- free transmission to Baker & T aylor. Dubbed CATNYP by the li­ brary, the initial system includes four terminals connected to a remote processor in New York, then linked via Telenet to a host processor in California. Approximately 40 terminals will be installed later this year and over 1.2 million records will eventu­ ally be loaded into the system. LaserDisclosure combines for the first time optical laser disks, C C D scanners, high resolution video terminals, and laser printers with computers and fiber optic cables in a system for instantaneous remote delivery of business information. Business and law libraries can view and duplicate original documents of publicly-traded companies— lOKs, lOQs, annual reports, and so on. This electronic publishing sys­ tem is helping New York Public L ib rary p u t infor­ m ation into th e user’s hands expediently. InfoCon- version enters th e rele v an t in fo rm a tio n — in th e form of m anuscript, illustrations, w ord processing diskette, or m agnetic ta p e — directly into th e com ­ p u te r. Illustrations an d text are th en m erged into one database w hich can be u p d ated and rep u b ­ lished. Corrections m ade to th e database during business hours are incorporated into m icrofiche o v e r n ig h t. M a n y tim e - c o n s u m in g task s a re c irc u m v e n te d —ty p esettin g , proofing, resettin g type, paste-up, p rin tin g and conversion to m icro­ fiche. Unlike “m icrorepublishing,” in w hich th e m i­ crofiche end-product is a photographed, m in ia tu r­ ized version of an already p rin ted page, first gener­ a tio n m ic ro p u b lish in g is th e d ire c t ele c tro n ic transfer of d a ta from a com puter-based publishing system to m icrofiche. T he Task Force identified 12 projects and presented them a t th e an n u al m eeting of th e STS Executive Board in D allas this past June. T he B oard selected five projects for im m ediate w ork an d created an ad hoc com m ittee for each project. T he com m ittees will m eet at th e ALA M id­ w in te r M eetin g a n d p re se n t th e ir p re lim in a ry results at th e 1985 A nnual C onference in Chicago. T he chairs an d some com m ittee m em bers were recru ited a t D allas. K atherine C hiang will con- tiu n e as chair of th e Task Force to coordinate the w ork of th e ad hoc com m ittees. But m ore members a re n eed ed . Science lib ra ria n s (am o n g others) know th a t th e acquisition and retrieval of confer­ ence proceedings can be a problem .
