ACRL News Issue (B) of College & Research Libraries 502 / C&RL News ■ September 2003 I n t h e ews N This “back to school” issue of C&RL News will keep you up-to-date on the projects and initiatives that came out of the ALA Annual Conference and informed by a number of engaging articles. Earlier this year, ACRL began gathering infor mation from its members and leaders to assist in crafting a new strategic plan. The association ex pects to have a new plan for the future solidified by early 2004. Input from ACRL members is an important aspect of the strategic planning pro cess. If you’d like to assist ACRL by making your voice heard, please participate in our online mem ber survey this month on the ACRL Web site, www.acrl.org. At the close of this year’s Annual Conference, Tyrone H. Cannon was officially welcomed as the 2003-04 ACRL president. As president, he will play a significant role in shepherding the association’s strategic planning process. His article “Partnerships and connections: The learning com munity as knowledge builders,” which bears the name of his presidential theme, provides more insight into the strategic planning process, in addi tion to further exploring his theme and goals for the upcoming year. The Board of Directors’ Actions from their meetings at the ALA Annual Conference can be found on page 518 and provide an overview of the projects, programs, and initiatives that ACRL will be working on in the coming year. To learn more about key topics covered at the Toronto conference, don’t miss the reports on conference programs that also appear in this issue (p. 509). Also included in this issue are two docu ments approved by the ACRL Board of Directors at Annual Conference, “Characteristics of programs of information literacy that illustrate best practices: A guideline” (p. 544) and the Scholarly Commu nication Committee’s “Principles and strategies for the reform of scholarly communication (p. 526).” — Stephanie Orphan, Editor-in-chief sorphan@ala.org http://www.acrl.org mailto:soiphan@ala.org
