sio n  to  p ro c e ss a n d  cata lo g  th e  re c o rd s o f F ree­
d o m  H o u se  in  M assachusetts, a n d  th e  p a p e rs 
o f its fo u n d ers, M uriel S. a n d  O tto  P. S n o w d o n . 
T he m aterials s p a n  1949–87 a n d  d o c u m e n t b o th  
a u n iq u e  co m m u n ity -b ased  social ag en cy  in th e  
R oxbury n e ig h b o r h o o d  o f B o sto n  a n d  th e  lives 
o f th e  tw o  African A m erican social w o rk ers w h o  
fo u n d e d  th e  o rganization.

The  Bern D ib n e r L ib ra ry  of Science a n d  
T ech n o lo g y  at Po ly tech n ic U niversity in  B ro o k ­
lyn h a s b e e n  a w a rd e d  a g ran t o f  $300,000 from  
th e  D ib n e r F u n d  o f W ilton, C onnecticut. T h e 
g ra n t s u p p o r ts  th e  D o c u m e n t Im ag e B ank N et­
w o rk  Retrieval project to  u se  already established 
p ro to c o ls o f library m aterial o rg an izatio n  to  d e ­
v e lo p  a n e w  form  o f access, delivery, storage, 
a n d  retrieval o f d o c u m e n ts a n d  articles in  im ­
ag e form at. T h e  goal o f th e  sy stem  is to  p erm it 
a u th o riz e d  u se rs to  retrieve d o c u m e n ts a n d  a r­
ticles at d e s k to p  c o m p u te rs via th e  In tern et, 
w h ile h a n d lin g  th e  copyright, intellectual p ro p ­
erty, a n d  royalties issues asso ciate d  w ith  d o c u ­
m e n t retrieval.

ars. At least 400 p a p y ri w ill b e  c a ta lo g ed , c o n ­
serv ed , a n d  digitized. A $405,547 g ra n t fo r th e  
U.S. A gricultural In fo rm atio n  N etw o rk  Project, 
le d  b y  C ornell U niversity, will e n a b le  B erkeley 
to  identify state-level literature d o c u m e n tin g  th e  
h i s t o r y  o f  U .S. a g r i c u l t u r e  a n d  r u r a l life  
(1820– 1945) n e e d in g  p reserv atio n . ■

T h e  A n d re w  W. M ellon F o u n d a tio n ’s 

“P ro g ram  fo r Latin A m erican Libraries a n d  
A rchives,” e s ta b lish e d  in 1996 a n d  ad m in ­
istered  by H arv ard  U niversity's D avid R ock­
e fe lle r C e n te r for Latin A m erican Studies, is 
offering $80,000 in g ra n t fu n d s e a c h  y e a r 
o v e r fo u r years th ro u g h  in dividual grants 
o f b e tw e e n  $5,000 a n d  $10,000. T h e  grants 
are in te n d e d  to  stre n g th e n  th e  research  b ase 
fo r Latin A m erican stu d ie s th ro u g h  su p p o rt 
o f Latin A m erican archives a n d  libraries that 
n e e d  sp ecial fu n d in g  in o rd e r to  im p ro v e 
th e co n d itio n s u n d e r w h ich  th eir collections 
are  k ep t, o r to  e x p a n d  access to  th e ir re­
