Martinez, w h o w as a p ­ p o in ted executive director in August 1994, said she was ex­ ercising an option in her three- year contract that perm its her to resign w ith six m onths n o ­ tice. “I feel very g ood ab o u t w hat has be e n accom plished during the last tw o years,” Martinez said. “T he association is m ov­ ing forw ard, b u t change is difficult. It is time for m e personally to m ove o n .” O n A ugust 20, M artinez se n t ALA staff an e-mail saying, “Following discussions w ith the Executive Board, I have agreed to stay as ex­ ecutive director for th e rem ainder o f my co n ­ tract, until A ugust 15, 1997.” Mary Somerville, ALA President, said, “In my m ind w e have th e best o f all possible w orlds. W e have continuity for th e com ing year, during w hich th e executive director will focus o n the Fund for America’s Libraries an d Goal 2000, and the board will have sufficient time to conduct an in-depth search for the new executive director." Everyone engaged in the provision of library services to program s outside traditional residen­ tial cam pus settings is ask ed to review th e ex­ isting guidelines an d provide feedback.
