Getchell Jr., former assistant di­ rector for reader services and collections at Wake Forest University, has been appointed director o f the library at Quinnipiac College in Hamden, Connecticut. Getchell was also a ref­ erence librarian/bibliographer and coordinator o f library instruction at the University o f Kan­ sas. Active in ACRL and ALA’s Reference and Adult Services Division (RASD), he currently chairs the RASD HS History in Libraries Discus­ sion Group. C h risto p h e r M illson -M artu la has been named director o f the Knight-Capron Library at Lynchburg College in Vir­ ginia. Before that he was associate librarian and assis­ tant director for administra­ tive services at Arizona State University West. He has also held positions at Lake For­ est College, the Greater Mid­ west Regional Medical Li­ brary Network, St. Xavier College, and Cornell Univer­ sity. Professionally active, Millson-Martula currently serves on committees o f ACRL’s College Libraries Sec­ tion and ALA’s Library Administration and Man­ agement (LAMA) division. Arnold Hirshon was recently named vice-pro vost for information resources at Lehigh Uni­ versity in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Hirshon previously served as uni­ versity librarian at Wright State University, associ­ ate director o f university library services at Vir­ ginia C om m onw ealth University, and in other capacities at Duke Uni­ versity and Wayne State U niversity. A c tiv e in Arnold Hirshon ACRL and ALA, Hirshon served as president o f the Association for Li­ brary Collections and Technical Services (ALCTS) in 1992, on the ALCTS Board o f Direc­ tors for many years, and as editor o f the ALCTS Newsletter for six years. Susan K. Nutter, director o f libraries at North Carolina State University (NCSU) since 1987, has been given the additional title o f vice-provost. Pro­ vost Phillip Stiles said that Nutter’s change in title “is a long overdue re c o g n itio n o f Ms. Nutter’s excellent and in­ dependent leadership of the libraries, which are the backbone o f our aca­ demic research programs Susan K. Nutter 786/C&RL News in the university.” The vice-provost designa­ tion was supported by the Commission on the State o f the Library at NCSU, the 1994 institu­ tional self-study, and the Faculty Senate as rec­ ognition o f the libraries’ critical role in creating direct communication links with key academic decision-makers. David Pinto has been appointed director o f the Wallace E. Mason Library at Keene State C ollege in N ew Hampshire. He previously served as director o f libraries at Mercyhurst College in Erie, Pennsylvania. Paul M. Anderson has been appointed as­ sistant director for library administrative services at the University o f Delaware, Newark. Doris M. Archer has been named reference services librarian at Christopher Newport Uni­ versity in Virginia. Gillian Bartoo is now reference librarian at Harvard University’s Littauer Library. Rosann Bazirjian is now assistant director o f technical services at Florida State University. Richard Bleiler is now coordinator for in­ structional services, research, and information services at the University o f Connecticut Storrs campus. Amory said upon his retirement, “I think the main requirement for a senior rare book cata­ loger is being old.” Janet Ayers, physical sciences/engineering li­ brarian at Northwestern University (NU), retired in August after 38 years o f service. Ayers joined NU in 1957 as the Tech Library’s first reference librarian. Jerry Drost recently retired as associate librar­ ian from the State University o f N ew York at Buffalo’s Lockwood Library after 31 years of service. Shonnie Finnegan, university archivist at the State University o f N ew York at Buffalo, re­ cently retired after 28 years o f service. Alar Kruus, associate director and coordina­ tor o f programs and services for METRO, the N ew York Metropolitan Reference and Research Library Agency, retired in July after 12 years of service. Kruus joined METRO in 1983 after serv­ ing for 22 at the N ew York Public Library as librarian, assistant branch librarian, and branch librarian. He served in central offices as adult group work specialist and a s supervising adult specialist for Manhattan branches and was prin­ cipal branch librarian at the Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped. His last NYPL position was that o f chief o f the Materials Ac­ quisitions Office. Ross Stephen, director o f library services at Rider University in Lawrenceville New Jersey, retired in September after 15 years o f service. Stephen’s 33-year career included positions as acquisitions librarian at Harper College and associate director o f university libraries at the University o f Wisconsin-Oshkosh. A member o f ALA’s Library Administration and Manage­ ment Association (LAMA), Stephen edited the LAMA Newsletter for four years. Pat Zadner recently retired as associate librar­ ian from the State University o f New York at Buffalo after 31 years o f service. D eath s Martha Teros Boaz died July 24 at the age of 83. Boaz served as dean and professor o f the Graduate School o f Library Science at the Uni­ versity o f Southern California, Los Angeles; pro­ fessor o f library science at the universities o f Tennessee and Michigan; and assistant librar­ ian at Madison College. A member o f ALA, the Special Libraries Association, and other profes­ sional organizations, Boaz also served as chap­ ter president o f the American Association o f University Women.
