This group is expected to discuss and analyze current preser­ vation needs and to advise the commissio on ways it can assist them with educationa opportunities, cooperative activities, publi visibility, or financial support. George Cunha, founde and director emeritus o f the N ortheast D ocu ment Conservation Center, delivered a key note address entitled “Library Conservation 1990’s and Beyond.” Other events included preservation education “film festival,” exhibit in the Main Library lobby, book treatment dem onstrations by the libraries’ conservators, tour o f th e L ib r a r ie s ’ P r e s e r v a tio n D e p a r t ment, and diagnostic clinics with “Dr. Book.” Bookmarks, posters, and book bags wit preservation messages w ere distributed dur ing the w eek an d are now available free o charge to other libraries. ARSC reprints p a m p h le t on p re s e rv a tio n o f sound recordings The Associated Audio Ar­ chives C om m ittee o f the A ssociation for Recorded Sound Collections (ARSC) has reprinted the classic 1959 publication, “Preservation and Storage of Sound Recordings,” by A. G. Pickett and M. M. Lemcoe. The original 74-page pam ­ phlet reported the results o f an LC investiga­ tion (supported by a Rockefeller Foundation Grant) of deterioration o f stored sou n d re­ cordings. Since the study covers deterioration during storage, not playback, most o f the re­ sults are still valid and useful, and may even b e applied to other A/V media. U o f N S W o ffe rs n e w p ro g ra m in co nservation In March 1993 the School of Information, Li­ brary and Archive Studies at the University of New South Wales in Kensington, Australia, will offer a new undergraduate program, the Bach­ elor of Information Studies (Conservation). It is a three-year, full-time course with strong emphasis on the application of chemical prin­ ciples to the conservation and preservation of paper and nonpaper formats, but also covers preservation program management, exhibition management, and computing. Graduates of the program are expected to complete a post-gradu­ ate qualification (the equivalent of a master’s degree) in librarianship or archives administra­ tion.
