G iven th e i n t e r e s t o f a h a n d f u l o f l i b r a r i e s a n d a m inim um am o u n t o f planning, a se ries of quality c o n tin u in g e d u c a tio n e x p e rie n c e s can b e m ade available co n v en ien tly and at little o r no cost. T h e Sangam on Valley L ib rary C o n so rtiu m in central Illinois ag reed upon such a p ro ject in th e spring o f 1977. T h e g ro u p had b e e n m e e tin g for se v era l y e a rs to sh a re m u tu a l c o n c e rn s a n d to f a c ilita te b o rro w in g a n d in t e r li b r a r y lo a n s for th e i r fa c u lty a n d s tu d e n ts . In re a s s e s s in g th e goals o f th e co n so rtiu m th a t y ear, it was d ec id e d th a t o n e o f th e b e s t w ays th e lib ra rie s c o u ld stre n g th e n each o th e r was to c o o p e ra te in offer­ ing a se rie s o f c o n tin u in g ed u catio n w orkshops for m e m b e r s ’ sta ffs. F o u r w e r e p l a n n e d fo r th e 1977-78 year: two on th e acq u isitio n , organiza­ tion, a n d h o using o f n o n p rin t m aterials, o n e on basic re fe re n c e te c h n iq u e s for paraprofessionals, and o n e on library instruction. D ifferen t in stitu ­ tions a s s u m e d r e s p o n s ib ility for e a c h to p ic in keeping w ith th e ir p artic u la r ex p e rtise .
