Blake, chief of the National Library of M edicine’s H istory of M edicine D ivision, Be­ thesda, Maryland, for 21 years, retired in October, h av in g received th e NLM B oard of Regents Award for Scholarly or Technical Achievement. Beth Boukidis retired on August 31 as librarian of the Curriculum Collection at Northwestern Uni­ versity, Evanston, Illinois, after 19 years of service. Anastasija Cakste has retired as the librarian of the Physics-Electrical Engineering Library, N orth­ eastern University, Boston, which she organized in 1965. Alhert M. Donley has retired as associate di­ rector of Northeastern University Libraries, Bos­ ton, where he had served for nearly 30 years. Barrara Greener, who has been on the staff of the Queens College Library, Flushing, New York, since 1950, recently retired as music librarian. DEATHS Scott Adams, deputy director of the National Library of Medicine from 1960 to 1969, died in Louisville, Kentucky, on October 3. He had previ­ ously served as chief of the Army Medical L ibrary’s acquisition division; librarian of the National Insti­ tutes of Health; and director of the Foreign Science In form ation Program of th e N ational Science Foundation. H arlan C. Brown, former director of the D.H. Hill Library, North Carolina State University, Ra­ leigh, died on October 10. Brown became director of the library in 1939 and retired in 1971 as the li­ brary’s associate director. Mary L ois Bull, former University of Illinois personnel librarian, died in U rbana on October 30. She received her bachelor of science degree from C entral Missouri University and her MLS from the University of Illinois. In 1927 she joined the Uni­ versity of Illinois Library as assistant to the library director. In 1951 she was named personnel librar­ ian, a position she held until her retirem ent in 1967. In 1969 she returned to the library to help piece together 15,000 partially destroyed catalog cards. Her collection of cartoons about libraries and li­ brarians was displayed at the University of Illinois U rbana and Chicago campuses some time ago and will be donated to the university library. Priscilla McG uire Pereira, humanities and education reference librarian at the Library of the G raduate School and University Center, City Uni­ versity of New York, since 1969, died suddenly on November 8. Bell to improve th e quality of A m erican education. T h e Com ­ mission is charged w ith m aking recom m enda­ tions to the nation and to the Secretary on pro­ m oting excellence in public and private schools and in colleges and universities. A series of six hearings was held throughout th e U nited States and ACRL mem bers testified on the contribu­ tion libraries can m ake to excellence in educa­ tion a t tw o of th e hearings.
