A p p o i n t m e n t s C an d le A lire, professor and dean of univer­ sity libraries at Colorado State University since 1997, has been appointed dean of library ser­ vices at the University of New Mexico, effec­ tive September 16, 2002. From 1991 to 1997, Alire was d e a n /director of the Auraria Library at the University of Colorado at Denver, w here she pre­ viously served as assis­ tant director for Instruc­ tion and Research Ser­ vices (1989-91). From 1984 to 1989, she was the director of the Learning Camile Alire Resource Center at Pikes Peak Community College in Colorado Springs. Her other previous positions include assistant to th e d e a n /d ire c to r at th e University of Denver’s Graduate School of Librarianship and Information Management (1980-84); librarian/ information specialist for Mathematica Policy Research, Denver (1978-80); and library direc­ tor for McCook College in Nebraska. S t e p h e n P a u l F o s te r has been nam ed univer­ sity librarian at Wright State University in Day- ton, Ohio. Foster was associate dean of uni­ versity libraries at Cen­ tral Michigan University. He has taught philosophy and library instruc­ tion classes and has published papers and given presentations on the topics of librarianship, scholarly communication, and philosophy. He authored Melancholy Duty: The Hume-Gibbon A tta c k on C hristianity (K luw er A cadem ic, 1997), and currently has a m anuscript titled “Desolation’s March: The Rise of Personalism and the Reign of Amusement in 21st Century America” under publisher review. Myers joined ASU West in 1987 as head of collection de­ velopm ent a n d biblio­ g rap h ic services. She has since served as di­ rector of library infor­ m ation and resources, interim coordinator of information access, and twice as interim dean. N u g e n t has been nam ed library director of Warren Wilson College in Asheville, North Carolina. R e t i r e m e n t s J e a n A lb rect, head of the forestry library at the University of Minnesota (UM), retired in January after 39 years of service. During her tenure, the library becam e nationally and in­ ternationally recognized for its collections and th e fo u r o n lin e d a ta b a s e s p r o d u c e d by Albrecht—Social Sciences in Forestry, Trail Plan­ ning Construction and Maintenance, Tropical Forest Conservation and Development, and Urban Forestry—w hich started as print publi­ cations in the 1970s and early 1980s to provide access to interdisciplinary material and grey literature and have continued to develop and expand since migrating online in 1992. For 15 years prior to her position as forestry librarian, Albrecht was head of departm ental libraries on the St. Paul Campus. W illia m H a n n a fo r d has retired as the direc­ tor of the Eliot Pratt Library at G oddard Col­ lege. Prior to this position, Hannaford was the library director at four other institutions, in­ cluding Albright College, Champlain College, and the American Farm School in Thessaloniki, Greece. He has just been designated a Fulbright Senior Specialist and expects to be appointed to a position in Greece, where he will be living. P e n e lo p e K r o sc h , university archivist at the University of Minnesota Libraries since 1986, has retired; she had been on the archives staff since 1965. In addition to collecting and pre­ serving the archives’ collections, she taught history classes about the techniques of primary research and aided researchers in mining the C&RL News ■ July/August 2002 / 525 archives’ resources. Krosch edited and tran­ scribed Shotgun a n d Stethoscope: TheJournals o f n o m a s Sadler Roberts (University of Min­ nesota, 1991). She has been an active mem ber of the Society of American Archivists, Midwest Archives Conference, Twin City Archives, Spe­ cial Libraries Association, Northern Great Plains Histoiy Association, and the Minnesota Ornitho­ logical Union. Krosch also served as a consulting archivist for several professional societies. V irg in ia H. Parr, reference librarian and bib­ liographer at the University of Cincinnati, has retired after 20 years of service to the univer­ sity. From 1973 to 1982, she held several posi­ tions at the University of Oregon Libraries. In 1978, she seived as founding editor of Behav­ ioral & Social Sciences Librarians, a quarterly journal published by Haworth Press. P atricia R o d k e w ic h has retired from the Uni­ versity of Minnesota after 41 years of service. She started her career as a librarian on the Minneapolis Campus in the Walter Library and m oved to the St. Paul Campus as head of cir­ culation. She was also documents librarian for m any years. In 1995, Rodkewich created and developed an electronic full-text library of scholarly working papers from departments of agricultural economics across the country. M arian n T ib lin , bibliographer of Scandina­ vian area studies at the University of Minne­ sota Libraries since 1968, has retired. Tiblin was also German and Dutch language and litera­ ture bibliographer from 1995 until her retire­ ment. She has been a major proponent of co­ operative collection development and has a long and distinguished record of service in the Society for the Advancement of Scandinavian Study, WESS, and the International Federation of Library Associations. D e a t h s R ob ert E. Cazden, 71, professor emeritus of li­ brary science at the University of Kentucky, has died. He was a member of the American Histori­ cal Society, the American Antiquarian Society, and the German-American Research Association. He w on numerous awards throughout his career and published several books and papers. K e n n e th A. L ohf, 77, w ho retired in 1993 after a 40-year career with Columbia Univer­ sity Libraries, died May 9 in New York City after complications from a stroke. Featured in the New York Times u pon his retirem ent for his remarkable contribution to rare b ook and spe­ cial c o llectio n s, Lohf w as also a p u b lish ed po et, literary scholar, bibliographer, and col­ lector. As C olum bia’s Rare Book and Manu­ Kenneth A. Lohf script Library (RBML) di­ rector for 25 years, Lohf s service to the collec­ tions d o u b led their size to a half-m illion volum es and 26-million m anuscript items. Among those w ere thousands of letters from authors like William Faulkner, James Joyce, Sinclair Lews, and Eugene O ’Neill; medieval manuscripts; and a 4,000-year old Babylonian cunneform tablet. During his tenure, RBML un­ derw ent a 3-million dollar renovation, the m oney for which Lohf nearly single-handedly raised. He also served for 20 years as secre­ tary-treasurer of the Council of the Friends of the Columbia Libraries. C h ristie V e r n o n , 78, longtime ALA and ACRL m em ber and W ashington Office supporter, has died. Vernon w as passionate about li­ brary legislative advocacy, political issues, and process. She w as a m em ber of ALA’s Com­ mittee on Legislation, chairing its Privacy Subcom m ittee, a n d a u th o r o f the C hapter H a n d b o o k f o r C om m ittees on L egislation/ G o v e rn m e n t R elations, w h ic h w as p u b ­ lished by ALA in 1990. O n a national level, V ernon w as a p p o in te d to the National Plat­ form C om m ittee o f th e D em ocratic Party o n several occasions a n d serv ed as a d e l­ e g ate to n u m e ro u s D em ocratic N ational C onventions. She w as fo u n d e r o f the P e n ­ insula D em ocratic W om en a n d p re sid e n t of th e Virginia F ed eratio n o f D em ocratic W om en (1992-94). V ernon w as th e librar­ ian at St. Leo’s College from 1986 u ntil h e r retire m e n t in Ju n e 2001. Prior to that, she was director of the library at Thomas Nelson Community College from 1970 to 1986. She also held positions at a num ber of public li­ braries across the country. ■
