LC comm issioned the Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR) to prepare back­ ground papers; conduct interviews with indi­ viduals in the technology, business, entertain­ m ent, academ ic, legal, archival and library communities; and prepare a report summariz­ ing the results. CLIR and LC have now p u b ­ lished the summary report and background pa­ pers as Building a national strategy fo r digital presen›ation: issues in digital media archiving. E m erg e n c y ru e d a The Heritage Emergency National Task Force has released Rueda d e salvam entoy respuesta ante emergencias, the Spanish-language ver­ sion of its Emergency Response and Salvage Wheel. These round sliding-window charts provide easy-to-use information for dealing with emergencies that threaten cultural collec­ tions. Side 1 of the w heel is devoted to em er­ gency response, and side 2 is devoted to sal­ vage. Each w heel comes in a resealable plastic bag with instructions in Spanish and English. Heritage Preservation will distribute 15,000 wheels free-of-charge to libraries, archives, and cultural institutions in Puerto Rico and parts of the U.S. with large Spanish-speaking popula­ tions. IIC Congress The International Institute for Conservation (IIC) will hold its 2002 Congress, “Works of Art on Paper, Books, Docum ents and Photographs: Techniques and Conservation,” in Baltimore, Maryland, from Septem ber 1 to 6. Congress activities will include presentations; tours of book, paper, and photograph conservation laboratories; receptions at the Walters Art Mu­ seum and the Library of Congress; and a trade show. The W ashington Conservation Guild (WCG) is the local organizer. Registration is $320 for m em bers of the IIC and WCG, $350 for nonm em bers, and $175 for students. Banks/Harris a w a r d ALA’s Association for Library Collections and Technical Services (ALCTS) announced that Ellen McCrady is the first recipient of the Paul Banks and Carolyn Harris Preservation Award. McCrady has b e e n dedicated to bookbinding, advocacy for alkaline paper, and the preserva­ tion of library materials throughout her career. As publisher of several newsletters, includ­ ing the A lka lin e Paper A dvocate and the A b ­ bey Newsletter, she has b e e n instrum ental in disseminating preservation information to oth­ ers in the field. This aw ard not only honors the recipient, but the m em ories of the two influential leaders of library preservation af­ ter w h o m it is nam ed.
