Littlewood has retired as govern- ment documents librarian, gay literature bibli- ographer, and associate professor of library ad- ministration at the University o f Illinois Library at Urbana-Champaign, after more than 38 years of Service. He began his career in 1962 as a serials bibliographer and joined the Govern­ ment Documents Library in 1964, where he served as head of the Documents Division through 1979. In 1996, he made a major estate commitment to create the John Littlewood and Don Laube Professorship in Gay Literature Fund, which will establish a full-time position at the library devoted to this area. George Shipman, the Philip H. Knight Uni­ versity Librarian, is retiring after two decades of dedicated Service to the University o f Or­ egon (UO). A Library of C on gress in tern in 1967, Shipman served there in several subse- quent capacities until 1971. Then he went to the University of Ten­ n e s s e e , K n o x ville, where he served as as­ George Shipman sistant and associate di­ rector of libraries for administrative services until joining UO in 1980. Shipman also served on the Board of Directors of the Center for Research Libraries and has a life membership in the ALA. He is also a member of the Na­ tional Association of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges Commission on Information Technologies. Shipman was an elected del- egate to the Online Computer Library Center (OCLC) Users Council for seven years, and served as a member and chair of OCLC’s Re­ search Library Advisory Council. Among Shipman’s many achievements, he oversaw implementation of the library’s automated online information system; played a leader­ ship role in the establishment o f Orbis, a con- sortium of 14 public and private academic libraries in Oregon and Washington; initiated a successful library development program, which has raised roughly $30 million for a variety o f library services and programs; stimulated the creation o f a comprehensive library instructional program for Computer in­ formation literacy and research methods; and established the Knight Library Press, a fine printing press that produces limited edition books, broadsides, and commemorative pieces. D e a t h s Yenshew Lynn Chao, librarian of the Rubel Asiatic Research Collection of the Fine Arts Li­ brary of Harvard College Library, died on July 24, 2000, after a long illness. Chao came to Harvard in 1971, as the first librarian o f the Rubel Asiatic Research Bureau in the Oriental Department of the Fogg Art Museum. The bu- reau evolved into the Rubel Asiatic Research Collection (RARC) and was integrated into the Fine Arts Library of the Yenshew Lynn ChaoHarvard College Library in 1978. Under Chao’s leadership, the Rubel Collection has grown into an indispensable research center for the study of the art, archi- tecture, and archaeology of East Asia, Cen­ tral Asia, Southeast Asia, and India. One of Chao’s many accomplishments was the de­ velopment of the Rubel Classification Scheme, authority files, and simplified catalog filing rules for the collection. Her scheme is still in use in Rubel and has been adopted by other research libraries. Sharon C. Joh n son , archivist for the Autry Museum o f Western Heritage, lost her battle with cancer on August 22, 2000. Johnson be­ gan her career with the Autry in 1992, where she was responsible for the institutional ar­ chives and manuscript collections. She had a deep knowledge of the material and a love o f Western history that made her indispens­ able to the museum. Handling a diverse col­ lection, Johnson assisted staff and research- ers and answered requests from around the world.
