Every year ACRL extends recognition and honor to winners o f its 18 awards. With al­ most $30,000 donated by generous corporate sponsors annually, ACRL has nominated, se­ lected, and honored the very best in academic librarianship and will continue to do so. Recognize a co lle agu e 's achievem ents: n om inate ACRL members are an integral element to the continuing success o f these awards. Please take a moment to reflect upon and think about the work o f some o f your colleagues. W e urge all o f you to nominate those whose work you admire, and whom you think should have the honor o f being recognized by presenta­ tion o f an ACRL award. With your nomina­ tions, the pool o f candidates for each award will continue the tradition o f being a com­ petitive and distinguished pool. A chievem en t an d d istin g u ish e d service a w ard s • Excellence in Academic Libraries Award (sponsored by Blackwell’s Book Ser­ vices):. $3,000 cash for three awards; one in each type-of-library. Recognizes academic li­ braries that are outstanding in furthering the educational missions o f their institutions. • Academic or Research Librarian of the Year Award (sponsored by Yankee Book Peddler):. $3,000 cash award. Recognizes an outstanding member o f the academic or re­ search library profession. • Hugh C. Atkinson Memorial Award (sponsored by ACRL, ALCTS, LAMA, LITA): $2,000 cash award. Recognizes outstanding achievements (including risk-taking) in the areas o f library automation, management, or development and research. • Marta Lange/CQ Award (sponsored by Congressional Quarterly, Inc.): $1,000 cash award. Recognizes a librarian who has made distinguished contributions to bibliography and information service in law or political science. • Miriam Dudley Instruction Librarian Award (sponsored by Elsevier Science, Ltd.): $1,000 cash award. Harmful as c o m p u ter m anufacturing and recycling c an b e, I am hop efu l ab o u t th e fu­ tu re o f th e industry. Jap an , th e N etherlands, a n d o th er north ern E u ropean countries are p assing “take-back” legislation that requires com panies to take b ack an d recycle products as they are discarded.16 “G reen” c om puter de­ sign technology exists to red u ce resources c o n su m ed an d w asted, to m ake the m an u ­ facturing process cleaner, to m inim ize the energ y co m p u ters c o n su m e, an d to m ake com ponents recyclable. W hen b etter com put­ ers are built, they will b e k ep t ou t o f the w aste stream longer. Consum ers should b e dem and­ ing th at c o m panies d o just that. Conservation a n d environm entalism is n o t alw ays clear-cut w h en information is the com ­ m odity, as it is in libraries. T he tools o f o u r trade d e m an d that w e u se p aper, toner, com ­ puters, an d electricity.
