O n o p e n in g d ay , th e 300,429 s q u a r e f o o t , t h r e e - s t o r y building h a d 700 com puters, w ith an additional 700 access points. T he 2,700-seat facil­ ity, d e s i g n e d s p e c ific a lly a ro u n d th e n e e d s o f fresh- — m an an d so p h o m o res, aim s to reduce th e “library anxiety” often ex perienced by first-time college students. “M any o f o u r s tu d e n ts c o m e fro m h ig h schools that hav e sm all libraries w ith very lim­ ited resources,” e x p lain ed Patricia Senn Breivik, d ean o f university libraries. “So, w h e n they w alk into a large university library they m ay feel over­ w h elm ed . It is an important milestone, however, in that it Is the first publication on academic libraries from NCES that compares data from different years and uses the Carnegie classification to organize it.
