C row e, dean of libraries at the Uni­ versity o f Kansas, Lawrence, has been selected as one of three delegates of the Bibliographical Center for Research to the OCLC Users Council. Crowe will serve a three-year term. G u y G arrison , professor and dean emeritus of Drexel University’s College of Information Stud­ ies, was the recipient of the 1992 Beta Phi Mu Award presented by ALA at its Annual Confer­ ence in July. The award, $500 and a citation donated by the Beta Phi Mu International Li­ brary Science Honorary Society, is given for distinguished service in library education. A 31-year employee, Auer was for­ merly director of libraries on the McNichols cam­ pus. Perry has served as university librarian at Dillard University in New Orleans since 1989. Prior to that she served as associate director for admin­ istration at the Harvard University Business School; consultant for the State Library of Loui­ siana; departm ent head at Texas A&M Univer­ sity Library; branch head at the Evanston Pub­ lic Library, Illinois; and media librarian in the Battle Creek, Michigan, Public School System. Retirem ents R ob ert B reyfogle, head o f monographic cata­ loging and assistant chief of the Catalog De­ partment at Stanford University (SU) Libraries since 1980, retired June 12 after 27 years at the SU Libraries. Breyfogle joined the Libraries in 1965 as a member of the Meyer Library Activa­ tion Unit. In 1969 he w as transferred to the Catalog Department and assumed responsibili­ ties as the monographic cataloger in linguistics. From 1969 to 1972 he participated in planning for the implementation of BALLOTS, served on the Uniform Titles Committee, and w orked on the foreign dissertations reclass project. In 1988 he added to his responsibilities the cataloging of A-V materials and became solely respon­ sible for the cataloging of the Meyer Language Lab materials. J o h n C. C a ld w ell, librarian and professor of history at Augustana College, Rock Island, Illi­ nois, retired last spring after a 36-year career in librarianship and teaching. He joined the staff at Augustana in 1975 as head of Denkmann Memorial Library. Before that he served as cata- loger an d assistant li­ brarian at Drew Univer­ sity fo r s e v e n y ears, librarian at California Lutheran College, and h ead o f technical ser­ vices at California State College, Stanislaus. G w e n d o ly n S. Cruzat, professor at the Univer­ sity of Michigan (UM) School of Information Studies since 1970, retired on September 1,1992. Cruzat received her B.A. in mathematics from Fisk University, an MLS from Atlanta University, and a Ph.D. in higher education/information science from Wayne State University. She was prom oted to associate professor at UM in 1976 and to professor in 1979. She received the Dis­ tinguished Service Award for her outstanding contributions to UM and the scholarly commu­ nity and was elected a director-at-large of the UM Alumni Association. Cruzat has been in­ volved in many professional activities and has served as a consultant to the U.S. Department of Education, the National Library of Medicine, and the Library of Congress. She also received the Janet Doe Lecturer Award from the Medical Library Association and w as nam ed a regent of the National Library of Medicine. S ally R o m er E van s, music librarian at Amherst College, retired on June 30, 1992, after almost 20 years of service. She began her career at Yale University and later held positions at the Smithsonian Institution, the Library of Congress, Princeton University, and Oberlin College. She joined the staff at Amherst as a cataloger in 1972. She is a graduate of Oberlin College and received an MLS from Simmons College. o h n H yltoft, conservator of the Smithsonian Institution Libraries (SIL) Book Conservation Laboratory (BCD, retired July 1, 1992. Hyltoft established the BCL in 1977 and spent 15 years repairing and rebinding thousands of manu­ scripts and books. He has been awarded nu­ m erous prizes in international bookbinding J 6 0 8 / C&RL N ew s competitions, published articles on bookbind­ ing and conservation, and is a contributor to SIL’s Book Collecting a n d the Care o f Books (rev. 1992). Hyltoft has curated several exhibitions over the years and has played a crucial role in SIL exhibition programs by ensuring that exhi­ bition designs allow for p roper support and housing to safeguard the fragile volumes. He has rescued countless items in SIL collections, and set up an environm ental monitoring pro­ gram throughout the libraries’ 40-some loca­ tions. Deaths D e b o r a h P erk al B alin sk y, former Africana cata- loger at Northwestern University (NU), Evanston, Illinois, died on May 7, 1992. Balinsky joined the Catalog Department at NU in 1978 as a copy cataloger, then served as Africana cataloger from 1982-87. Balinsky com bined h er library work with completing a Ph.D. in French. She is sur­ vived by her husband and tw o daughters, now four and seven years old. J o h n E ld rid ge F rost, librarian emeritus at New York University (NYU) and noted genealogist, died July 23,1992, in York, Maine, at the age of 75. Frost, w ho w as also an Episcopal priest, served as the librarian of the Gould Memorial Library at NYU’s former Heights campus from 1955-72. From 1972-82 he w as a m em ber of the NYU library faculty. Frost graduated from the University of Maine in 1938, received a bach­ elor of sacred theology degree from Berkeley Divinity School at Yale University in 1941, an MLS from Colum bia U niversity in 1948, a master’s o f arts degree from the University of New Hampshire in 1948, and a Ph.D. from NYU in 1953. During World War II he was a chap­ lain in the navy. A noted genealogist, Frost authored The Nicholas Frost Family, Colonial Vil­ lage, Sarah O m eJewett, and M aine Genealogy. J e a n e n e M cN air, a librarian for 27 years at the University of South Florida (USF), died August 1, 1992, in Tampa. McNair received her MLS from Indiana University in 1965. She joined the USF faculty in 1965 as a cataloger, then becam e head of the Collection Development D epartm ent and the library’s first hum an re­ sources librarian. Her accomplishments include extensive service at the local and national lev­ els of professional librarianship. G ertru d e C o d d in g to n D a v is M id d en d o rf, li­ brarian at Mary Baldwin College, Staunton, Vir­ ginia, from 1957 to 1977, died in Staunton on May 10, 1992. T h o m a s G. N arb eth , head of technical services and automation at David Bishop Skillman Li­ brary, Lafayette College, Easton, Pennsylvania, died of cancer on May 20, 1991, at the age of 42. Narbeth began his library career in 1973 as a member of the reference department at George W ashington University. In 1981 he m oved to the State University of New York-Binghamton w here he held positions in reference and tech­ nical services. In 1986 he accepted the position at Lafayette. Narbeth was a m em ber o f ALA, ACRL (including the Delaware Valley chapter), and EDUCOM. T a isa S co rs, former librarian at the Library of Science and Medicine o f Rutgers, the State Uni­ versity o f New Jersey, died suddenly on July 1, 1992, while on vacation in San Diego. Scors earned her bachelor’s from the Byelorussian State University Medical School in Minsk and her MLS from Rutgers. She w orked at Down- state Medical Center before joining Rutgers in 1966 to be head o f the Periodicals Department. In 1972 she becam e biological and medical sci­ ences resource librarian and held that position until her retirement in 1991.
