B a ile y is th e founder and former m odera­ tor o f the PACS-L discussion list, w h ich n ow has over 4,830 users in 46 countries. He is also the founder and editor-in-chief of the Public Access Computer Systems Review, a refereed electronic library journal, and co-founder and co-editor of Pub­ lic Access Computer Systems News, an electronic library newsletter. Joan ne Euster, university librarian at the Uni­ versity of California, Irvine, has been nam ed chair o f ACRL’s 7th National Conference Ex­ ecutive Committee. The conference is scheduled to be held March 29- April 1, 1995, in Pitts­ burgh. Euster’s commit­ tee will be responsible for selecting a theme for th e c o n f e r e n c e a n d identifying and inviting the keynote speakers. Euster has been very active in professional J o a n n e Euster associations and served as ACRL president from 1986-87. When asked about her plans for the conference, Euster said, “National conferences are intrinsically interest­ ing because they can be more focused and they provide us with many opportunities to meet new people and informally communicate ideas. I am looking forward to exploring issues in librarianship and higher education as we d e­ velop plans for ACRL’s next conference.” Reg­ istration materials for the conference will be available in November 1994. Karen N elso n H oyle, curator of the Children’s Literature Research Collections at the Univer­ sity of Minnesota, was honored twice in Octo­ ber. First, the University of Saint Thomas pre­ P e o p le in th e News sented Hoyle with its. hon­ orary degree of D octor of Letters. A few days later, the Minnesota Libraiy Associa­ tion presented her with its Distinguished Achievement Award at its annual confer­ ence. In the 25 years that H o y le h a s c u r a te d th e Children’s Collections, she has d e v e lo p e d it in to an u n s u rp a s s e d re so u rc e of books, manuscripts, and il­ lustrations. J e s sie C arney Smith, director of the Fisk Uni­ versity Library, has been named by the Women’s National Book Association (WNBA) as winner o f th e 1992 WNBA Award. Every other year the WNBA recognizes a living American woman w ho has made a signifi­ cant contribution to the world of books. Smith w as h o n o re d for h er d ev o tio n to librarian- sh ip , ed u c atio n , civil rights, race relations, re­ search, and writing. The Jessie Carney Smith author of seven books and num erous journal articles, Smith’s latest w ork is Notable Black A m erican Women, p ub­ lished by Gale Research in 1991, and featuring biographies of 500 outstanding women. Ken Logan, South Asian librarian at the Uni­ versity o f California, Berkeley, since 1970, has been nam ed librarian for the Colegio Americano de Quito in Ecuador. Before joining UC-Berke- ley, Logan served two years in India as a U.S. Peace Corp volunteer working primarily as a 36/C& RLNews librarian. He then served briefly at Berkeley’s Center for South Asia Studies. Eugene S. Mitchell has been named director of library services at Alvernia College in Read­ ing, Pennsylvania. He had been associate di­ rec to r for co llectio n management at William Paterson College and, before that, he held sev­ eral po sitio n s at the State University of New York at Buffalo. Mitch­ ell has published many professional articles and was the recipient of the New Jersey Library As­ s o c ia tio n R esearch Eugene Mitchell Award. He received his B.A. from Canisius College and both his MLS and Ph.D. from Rutgers University. Jay Martin Poole has been named head li­ brarian at the College of Santa Fe, New Mexico. Poole was formerly assistant director for col­ le c tio n an d b ib lio ­ g ra p h ic se rv ic e s at Texas A&M University (1991-92); assistant uni­ versity librarian for pub­ lic services at the Uni­ versity o f California, Irvine (1985-90); assis­ tant director for collec­ tio n d e v e lo p m e n t at Texas A&M University (1981-85); and editor of Jay Martin P oole Choice magazine (1979- 81). He has also held positions at the Univer­ sity of Texas at Austin, the State University of New York at Buffalo, and the University of Washington, Seattle. He is a graduate of the University of Tulsa and earned his MLS from the University of Oklahoma. He has long been ac­ tive in ALA and the Texas Library Association, for which he edited the Texas Library Journal. Gail Wood, former director of educational sup­ p o r t se rv ic e s an d ca m p u s d ire c to r o f Germantown Educational Support Services at Montgomery College, Maryland, has been ap­ pointed director of libraries at Alfred State Col­ lege of Technology, New York. Wood holds three degrees from the University of Maryland, College Park: a B.A. in library science (1975), an MLS (1979), and an M.A. in English (1989). She served as senior acquisitions librarian for Informatics, Inc., in Rockville, Maryland, where she handled acquisitions for the Goddard Space Flight Center Library Project. The author of numerous professional papers, Wood has also served as book reviewer for Library Journal and the Women Library Workers Journal since 1989- She is a member of ALA, the Maryland Library Association, and the National Women’s Studies Association. Retirements C harles H am ilton, authorities editor in the Cataloging Department at the University of Cali­ fornia, Berkeley, retired November 1, 1992, af­ ter 50 years o f service to the University Library. Hamilton began w orking there in 1942 as a student assistant in the Documents Department, then joined the navy as a Japanese language officer. In 1946 he rejoined the Documents De­ partm ent an d entered the School o f Librarian- 38/C & R L News ship the following year. In 1948 he joined the new East Asiatic Library and worked there un­ til 1976, w hen he joined the Cataloging De­ partment. His official retirement was in Novem­ ber of 1991, but he remained on the job in a half-time capacity until this past November. Elizabeth Kislitzin, head of the Collection De- velopment/Reference Services Department at the University of California, Berkeley (UCB), retired October 31, 1992, after more than 35 years of service to the library. She began her career in 1954 as a junior librarian at Cornell University, and after a brief stint at the Contra Costa County Library, she took her first job at UCB in 1955 as assistant head of the Reserve Book Room. From there she became assistant head of the Giannini Foundation Library, then assistant head and head of the Loan Depart­ ment. From 1973 on she was assistant head and then head of Collection Development/Ref- erence Services, and served as interim assistant university librarian for collection development following Sheila Dowd’s retirement. K enneth A. Lohf, chief librarian of the Rare Book and Manuscript Library at Columbia Uni­ versity for 25 years, retired at the end of De­ cember. In a 40-year Columbia career, Lohf distinguished himself as a rare book, manu­ script, and book arts authority; a poet, bibliog­ rapher, collector, and scholar. One of his great­ est acquisitive jewels is the publishing archives: the complete files of Random House, Norton, Harper and Row, and other publishers as well as literary agencies of the 19th and 20th centuries. A fellow of the Pierpont Morgan Library and a council member of the American Museum in Britain, he was also elected in 1990 as president of the Grolier Club. Three exhibitions at Columbia have been assembled to mark Lohf’s retirement. “The Lohf Years" includes 103 rare editions, manuscripts, drawings, and paintings acquired while Lohf was in charge. “A Librarian’s Gifts” includes 135 manuscripts, letters, and first editions of En­ glish and American authors of the last two cen­ turies donated to Columbia by Lohf between 1958 and 1992. And “Kenneth A. Lohf: A Co­ lumbia Career” features photos, books, and papers documenting his library, writing, and collecting careers. W illiam E. M eneely retired December 1,1992, after 16 years of service in the Pullen Library at Georgia State University. During those years, Meneely served as catalog librarian, head of the Monograph Cataloging Unit, science bibli­ ographer, and head of the Collection Develop­ ment Department. His retirement is due to medi­ cal reasons. Deaths R olf Erickson, head of Northwestern Univer­ sity Library’s (NUL) Circulation Services Depart­ ment, died on November 2, 1992, after an 18- month struggle with lymphatic cancer. He was 51. A 1962 graduate of St. O lafs College, Rolf served for two years as a mission teacher in New Guinea and for a year as a high school librarian in Random Lake, Wisconsin. He then earned his MLS at the University of Wisconsin in 1966 and in the same year was appointed administrative assistant to NU’s university li­ brarian. He later served briefly in the NUL Ref­ erence Department before being named head of Circulation Services. K athryn S. Wright, m onographic and rare books cataloging librarian at Indiana State Uni­ versity (ISU), died on September 26, 1992. Be­ fore joining the ISU staff in 1970, Wright worked at Villanova University and the Armed Forces Library in Korea. ■
