While serving as e x e c u tiv e d ir e c to r o f th e Southeastern State C oopera­ tive Library Survey, she coordinated an d inter­ preted a statistical study of library service called Libraries a n d Library Services in the Southeast. P eter H arris Curtis has b e e n appointed di­ rector o f library services at Villa Julie College, S tev en so n , M aryland. H e had previously b een curator a n d h ead o f the Marylandia D epartm ent a t th e U n iv e rs ity o f M a ry la n d a t C o lle g e Park. He holds a B.A. from O berlin College, an M.A. an d Ph.D. in American history from Indiana University, and a n MLS fro m D re x e l P eter Curtis University. A native of N ew Jersey, Curtis is a m em ber of ALA, ACRL, the Maryland Library Association, and the Mary­ land Historical Society. E van Ira Farber, Earlham College Librarian since 1962, received a D istinguished Alumni Award from the University o f North Carolina School o f Inform ation an d Library Science at its 60th Anniversary Celebration/Alum ni Day o n May 1. Farber is know n in the field as a leading authority o n bibliographic instruction. He w as nam ed ACRL’s Academic or Research Librarian o f the Year in 1980, and received the D octor o f H um ane Letters D egree from both St. Lawrence and Susquehanna Universities. Lucia J o h n s o n Rather, director for catalog­ ing at the Library o f Congress from 1976 to 1991, received a D istinguished Alumni Award from the University o f North p le Carolina School of Inform a­ tion an d Library Science at its 60th Anniversary Celebra­ h e tion/A lum ni Day on May 1, 1992. Rather’s career at LC also encom passed reference w s services and library systems analysis. She w as instrum en­ tal in m any of LC’s technical se rv ic e s in n o v a tio n s th a t have occurred in th e past 33 years, and continues to con­ sult th ro u g h th e R esearch Libraries G roup President’s Com m ission for Technical Processing in the 1990s. T su y u k o S h is h id o , serials librarian at th e Hiroshima Jogakuin College Library in Japan, will b e a visiting faculty m em ber an d serve an internship in the D epartm ent o f Reference and Library Instruction at the University of Evans­ ville Libraries, Indiana. A university librarian since 1973, Shishido will study the reference an d instruction operations at the university for six m onths beginning in Septem ber, and will participate in collection developm ent, research, library instruction, and reference services. K. W ayne Sm ith, president and chief execu­ tive officer of OCLC O nline C om puter Library Center, Ohio, received the honorary doctor of laws degree from O hio University during com ­ m encem ent cerem onies on Ju n e 13. Smith was ho n o red for his contributions to libraries and inform ation access, an d in recognition of the historic ties betw een O hio University and OCLC. Smith’s 30-year career includes positions in higher education, business, an d governm ent, including service as chairman and CEO o f World Book, Inc.; group m anaging partner, Coopers & Lybrand; director of program analysis for the National Security Council; an d university p ro ­ fessor at W ake Forest University. K atina P. Strauch, h ead o f collection devel­ o p m en t at the College o f Charleston, South C arolina, re c e iv e d a D istin g u ish ed A lum ni Award from the University of North Carolina School o f Inform ation and Library Science at its 60th Anniversary Celebration/Alum ni Day o n May 1, 1992. Strauch has authored an d e d ­ September 1 9 9 2 /5 4 3 ited 16 books on a variety of topics, published numerous articles, and made many professional presentations. Ten years ago she organized the first “Charleston Conference: Issues in Book and Serial Acquisitions.” A ppointm ents Lynn Scott C ochrane has been nam ed dean for library and learning services at Marymount U niversity, A rlington, Virginia. Since 1984 Cochrane has been em ­ ployed at the Newman Library of Virginia Poly­ tech n ic In s titu te an d State University (VPI/ SU) in Blacksburg. She m ost re c e n tly serv ed there as assistant profes­ sor and assistant to the university librarian; ear­ lier, she w as h ead o f user services and ILL li­ Lynn Scott Cochrane brarian. From 1980-83 she w as ILL librarian at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond. Cochrane received her MSLS from Catholic University and is currently a Ph.D. candidate in public administration at VPI/SU. She is an active m em ber of ALA and the Virginia Library Association, w here she served as president in 1986-87. Joyce D avis, former associate librarian for ad­ ministration at Hollins College, has b een ap­ pointed director o f library services at Catawba C o lle g e , S a lis b u ry , North Carolina. Davis has served in various ca­ pacities at O klahom a State University Library, B r id g e p o r t ( C o n n .) Public Library, Ferguson L ibrary in S tam fo rd , Conn., the University of Notre Dame Memorial L ibrary, C o n n e c tic u t S ta te L ib rary , a n d Joyce Davis P e rk in s L ib rary a n d Duke Divinity Library at Duke University. She has also served as manager of library systems support services for Cincinnati Electronics Corp. She holds a bachelor’s degree from William Jewell College, an MLS from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and a master’s of divinity from Duke University. Sohair Elbaz, former information researcher and librarian at the Center for the Study o f Eth­ ics and the Profession at Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT), Chi­ cago, has been nam ed the university’s director of libraries. Elbaz, w ho has b een w ith IIT since 1988, r e c e i v e d h e r bachelor’s degree in se­ mantic languages and a master’s degree in Afri­ c a n la n g u a g e s fro m C a iro U n iv e rs ity in E gypt; a n MLS from Sohair Elbaz Catholic University o f America; and a doctorate in information sci­ ence from Simmons College. Peter B. Kaatrude has been nam ed dean of library services at Lamar University in Port Arthur, Texas. He w as most recently associate director of the Eilender Library at Nicholls State University and, before that, associate librarian at the UCLA Graduate School o f Management Library. Havlik, engineering librarian at the University Libraries, University o f Notre Dame, retired on June 30 after 19 years of service on the library faculty. Havlik began his career at Iowa State College as exchange librarian, then w orked as reference/docum ents librarian at Purdue University, at the Linde Division of Union Carbide, the U.S. Office of Education’s Library Service Bureau, and as library director at Nova University. From 1973 to 1980 he held the position of assistant director for technical Septem ber 1 9 9 2 / 5 4 5 services at N otre D am e. An a c c o m p lis h e d scholar, Havlik is k n ow n locally for his exhib­ its w hich have focused on them es like the Chi­ cago W o rld Fairs, Darwin’s voyage, Halley’s Comet, and extraterres­ trial life. Nationally he has earn ed recognition fo r h is b io g r a p h ic a l sketches in the St. Jam es Guide to Biography and A m erican N ational B i­ ography as w ell as for his m ajor c h a p te rs in M agazines f o r Libraries, Books f o r College Librar­ ies, and M agazinesfor Young People. A life mem­ ber o f ALA, ACRL, and SLA, Havlik holds a B.S. from the Illinois Institute o f T echnology and an M.S. from the University of Illinois. Guela J o h n so n , social w ork librarian at the University o f W ashington, Seattle, retired in May after m ore than 22 years in that position. D eaths Robert B ooth , form er director o f the Library Science P rogram at W ayne State U niversity (WSU), died on May 15 at the age o f 75. Booth earned his bachelor’s degree from WSU in 1941 and a bachelor’s degree in library science from Columbia University in 1942. H e received an MLS from the University o f Michigan and a doc­ torate from W estern Reserve University (WRU). In I960 B ooth joined the WSU faculty as asso­ ciate professor of library science, becam e chair­ man of the program in 1964, and becam e the program ’s director in 1974. He retired in 1983. Booth also served as a research associate and instructor at WRU from 1956-60, as associate librarian at the M assachusetts Institute o f Tech­ nology from 1947-56, as reference librarian at the P eabody Institute Library from 1946-47, and as editor an d bibliographer at University Microfilms in Ann Arbor from 1944-46. B ooth w as a n active m em b er o f ALA, the Michigan Library Association, Beta Phi Mu, and the A m erican A ssociation o f U niversity Pro­ fessors. H e w as h o n o re d as a D istinguished Alumnus of th e U niversity o f M ichigan an d WRU. S h irley H esslein , director o f Lockwood Me­ morial Library at the State University o f New York at Buffalo until h e r retirem ent in 1984, died in May from pulm onary embolism after undergoing back surgery. H esslein joined the Health Sciences Library at SUNY-Buffalo in 1969 an d becam e associate director o f that library in 1971. She earn ed tenure in 1975 an d received the C hancellor’s Award for Excellence in Li- brarianship in 1976-77. Marta Lange, h ead o f the Reference D epart­ m ent at North Carolina State University (NCSU), Raleigh, d ied Ju n e 8 of injuries she received in an autom obile accident| o n Ju n e 7.
