H iron s, a ctin g CONSER coordinator o f the Library o f Congress, is the winner o f the 1996 annual B ow ker/U lrich Serials Li­ brarianship Award. She is b ein g reco gn ized fo r her unflagging commitment to quality and cooperation in serials cataloging through her significant contributions to the CONSER Cataloging Manual, which she created. The manual took three years to prepare and presents the policies and practices for serials cataloging in a logical arrangement. Ernest B. Ingles, chief librarian and executive director o f learning systems at the University o f Alberta, was awarded the Marie Tremaine Medal for excellence in Canadian bibliography by the Bibliographic Society o f Canada. Ingles was founding director o f the Canadian Institute for Historical Microreproductions, and as such laid the groundwork for and superintended the task o f transferring Canada’s printed heritage to microfiche. Ingles is also the author o f more than 20 publications, among them are three major works: Canada: The Printed Record: A Bibliographic Register with Indexes (4th ed., 1984), Canada (W orld Bibliographic Series #62, 1990), and Bibliography o f Canadian Bibliog­ raphies (3rd ed., 1994). Marilyn Myers, head o f collection develop­ ment and bibliographic services at Arizona State University West, was honored as the fifth re­ cipient o f the H olw ay R. Jones Award for Dis­ tinguished Service by the Council o f Planning Librarians (CPL). During her membership in CPL, Myers has served as president, as a mem­ ber o f the Editorial Advisory Board o f the CPL Bibliography Series, and as a member o f CPL Nominating Committees. She is currently the listserv administrator for CPLFYI-L, and chair o f the Strategic Planning Committee. Mary Reichel, university librarian at Appala­ chian State University in North Carolina, is the newly elected chair o f the SOLINET (Southeast­ ern Library Network) Board o f Directors. Reichel served on the ALA Council from 1990 to 1994 and currently serves on the ACRL Board o f Directors. Other new SOLINET offic­ ers are: vice-ch air: Jean Major, university librarian at O ld Dom inion University; secretary: Karen McDaniel, director o f libraries at Ken­ tucky State University; and treasurer: Sandra M. Coo­ per, state librarian o f North Carolina. A lso, Jennifer Cargill and Paul A. Willis were elected to three-year terms on the SOLINET Board o f Directors. Cargilll is dean o f libraries at Loui­ siana State University; Willis is director o f li­ braries at the University o f Kentucky. Finally, tw o new delegates have been elected to serve three-year terms on the SOLINET delegation to the OCLC Users Council. They are: Larry P. Alford, senior associate university librarian at the University o f North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and Birdie O. Weir, director o f libraries at Ala­ bama A&M University. John V. Richardson Jr., associate professor in the Department o f Library and Information Science in the Graduate School o f Education and Inform ation Studies at UCLA, w ill be a visiting distinguished scholar at the Research and Special Projects O ffic e o f the OCLC Online Computer Library Center in Dublin, Ohio, during his 1996-97 academic year sabbati­ cal. Richardson on aspects o f general ref­ erence work, notably the architectural logic o f question-answering and knowledge-based or expert system front ends that could be made available on the W orld W ide Web. A p p o in tm e n ts D. Russell Bailey has been named library di­ rector at Green Mountain College in Poultney, 608/C&RL News Vermont. Bailey was formerly with Eckerd Col­ lege in St. Petersburg, Florida, where he served as a faculty member and instructional services librarian. A graduate o f Florida Presbyterian (Eckerd) College, Bailey received master’s de­ grees from the University o f Kentucky and the University o f South Florida, and master’s and doc­ toral degrees from Louisiana State University. Nancy M. Cline, dean o f University Libraries at Penn State since 1988, has been named Roy E. Larsen librarian o f Har­ vard College. Cline be­ gan her career at Penn State in 1970 as a docu­ ments librarian, then was named head o f the Gov­ ernment Documents Sec­ tion in 1971, a position she held until 1980 when she was named chief o f the B ibliograph ic Re­ sources Department. In Nancy M. Cline 1984 she became assis­ tant dean and head o f Bibliographic Resources and Services until 1988. Currently president o f ARL, Cline is also a member o f ALA, EDUCOM, and RLG, and serves on the RLG Board o f Di­ rectors and has chaired its Finance and Admin­ istration Committee. She also serves on the Board o f Directors o f the Association o f Ameri­ can Colleges and Universities. Ronald F. Dow, associate dean o f university libraries at Penn State University, has been ap­ pointed dean o f River Campus libraries at the University o f Rochester (UR). D ow has served as associate dean at Penn State since 1993, and was assistant dean there from 1990 to 1993. Before that he served as director o f libraries for Shearson Lehman Brothers in New York. UR provost Charles Ronald F. Dow E. Phelps said, “Ron D ow brings to the university a combination o f out­ standing experience and a level o f enthusiasm for his work that are unmatched.” Mark L. Daganaar has been appointed direc­ tor o f Eilender Memorial Library at Nicholls State University in Thibodaux, Louisiana. Daganaar has served as acting director and associate di­ rector since 1994. Before that he served as di­ rector o f library services at Three Rivers Com­ munity College in Poplar Bluff, Missouri. A graduate o f Midland College, Daganaar received his MLS from the University o f Missouri. Frances Groen has been appointed director o f libraries at McGill University in Montreal. Green has been at McGill since 1974, serving as life sciences area librarian, associate directo r fo r public services and col­ lections, and deputy di­ rector o f libraries. She has also held positions at Stanford U n iv e rs ity ’s Lane Medical Library and the University o f Pitts­ burgh. She is active in Frances Groen IFLA and is a past-presi­ dent o f the Medical Library Association. In 1996 she received the Canadian Association o f Col­ lege and University Libraries Outstanding Aca­ demic Librarian Award. Suzanne Thorin, associate librarian at the Li­ brary o f Congress, has been appointed dean o f the Indiana University Libraries, Bloomington. Thorin served in many capacities at LC during her 16 years there, in­ cluding chief o f staff, act­ ing director o f the Library o f Congress Public Ser­ vice and Collection Man­ agement, ch ief o f the General Reading Rooms Division, assistant chief Suzanne Thorin o f that division, head o f Research Facilities, and head o f the Music Sec­ tion in National Library Services for the Blind and Physically Handicapped. She also served as the official U.S. representative, appointed by the White House, for the G-7 Electronic Librar­ ies Project. She was responsible for the Na­ tional Digital Library Program; for THOMAS, a legislative information system; and for GLIN, a global law information network. Karin Trainer, associate university librarian at Yale University since 1983, has been ap­ pointed university librarian at Princeton Uni­ October 1996/ 609 versity. Trainer began her career as a descrip­ tive cataloger at Princeton in 1972. She then served as catalog maintenance librarian from 1974 to 1978, then became director o f techni­ cal and automated services at New York Uni­ versity. An early proponent o f online catalogs for academic libraries, Trainer has worked with RLG on a number o f electronic applications for scholarship and served for six years as review editor for Information Technology and Librar­ ies. A graduate o f Rutgers University, Trainer received her MLS from Drexel University and her master’s in liberal arts from N ew York Uni­ versity. Philip M. Turner has been named dean o f the School o f Library and Information Sciences at the University o f North Texas (UNT ) in Denton. Since 1988 Turner had served as dean o f the School o f Library and Information Studies at the University o f Ala­ bama, where he had also served since 1991 as as­ sistant vice-chancellor for academic affairs. In addition to his role as Philip M. Turner dean at UNT, Turner will serve as associate vice-president o f academic affairs for distance education, and he will chair the university’s Information Resource Council. The author o f many books and articles, Turner was only the second academic ever to win the Annual Award for Achievement in Managing Information Technology given by Carnegie Mellon University and American Management Systems. Nicole Auer is now coordinator for client educational programs at Virginia Tech Univer­ sity Libraries. Marcia Bianchi has been appointed cata­ log librarian at Reed College in Portland, Or­ egon. Shubert retired in July after serving as assistant commissioner for libraries in the N ew York State Education Department since 1977. He has been named state librarian emeri­ tus by the N ew York State Board o f Regents. Shubert began his professional career as refer­ ence and documents librarian at the Nevada State Library. He has also served as state librar­ ian o f Ohio and Nevada, and as assistant direc­ tor o f the ALA International Relations Office. He was appointed by President Ford to the Advisory Committee for the 1979 White House Conference on Library and Information Services and served on a planning group for the 1991 conference. He has received distinguished alum­ nus awards from the University o f Denver (1979) and SUNY College at Geneseo (1985), and re­ ceived the Distinguished Public Service Award and medal from the Nelson A. Rockefeller Col­ lege o f Public Affairs at the University at Al­ bany (1987). D e a th s Henry G. Gilbert, a reference librarian at the National Agricultural Library (N AL) since 1969, died last April after recovering from a bone marrow replacement operation he had in 1995 to fight against non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. He was 66. At NAL Gilbert served for several years as librarian for the U.S. National Arboretum, and was until recently the curator o f the library’s Nursery and Seed Trade Catalogs Collection. Before joining NAL, Gilbert held positions with various agricultural organizations including ex­ periment stations and garden centers, and was a plant quarantine inspector for the USDA at the Port o f N ew York. Wallace R. Nethery, retired librarian o f the Hoose Library o f Philosophy at the University o f Southern California (USC), died at home last February. Nethery served as librarian o f the Hoose Library from 1956 to 1976. From 1964 to 1976 he also served as editor o f CORANTO, the journal o f the Friends o f the USC Libraries. An authority on Charles Lamb, Nethery was the author o f several books and a contributor to many scholarly publications. October 1996/611 Louise Jones Giles, 46, outstanding in the field o f community college learn­ ing resource centers, a leader in the American Library Association and past-president o f the Association o f College and Research Libraries, died on December 31, 1976. Detroit firemen responding to a fire in her home discovered the bodies o f Louise and her husband o f 23 years [Edwin C. Giles] at about 6:30 a.m. Mrs. Giles was born in Aragon, Georgia, on April 20, 1930. She received her B.A. in foreign languages from the University o f Ak­ ron in 1952 and her M.S. in library science from Drexel Institute o f Technology in 1953 (Alice B. Kroeger Scholarship recipient). In 1953 she received the Buenos Aires Conven­ tion Fellowship to spend one year as an ex­ change student in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. She had completed course work for her doctorate from the Center for the Study o f Higher Edu­ cation at the University o f Michigan. At the time o f her death, Mrs. Giles was dean o f learning resources at Macomb County Community College, Warren, Michigan, a p o­ sition she had held since March 1970. Although her contributions were most instrumental in the growth and influence o f learning resources, her influence and insight will be sorely missed throughout the college. Prior work experiences were positions as associate dean o f learning resources at Oakland Community College, first at Highland Lakes Campus, Union Lake, Michi­ gan, and then at Orchard Ridge Campus, Farmington, Michigan, in 1965– 70, and head o f the foreign language collection and first as­ sistant, young adult and adult librarian at De­ troit Public Library in 1953– 65. Mrs. Giles was active in the American Li­ brary Association (past president o f ACRL, past chairman o f the Community and Junior Col­ lege Libraries Section, member o f many ALA committees), Michigan Library Association, As­ sociation for Educational Communications and Technology, Michigan Association o f Admin­ istrators o f Learning Resources, National Soci­ ety for Programmed Instruction, Michigan As­ sociation o f Community College Instructional Administrators, and Michigan Academy o f Sci­ ence, Arts and Letters. She had served on ac­ creditation teams for both the North Central Association and the Middle States Association Commission o f Higher Education and had just completed an accredi­ ta tio n v is it fo r the Middle States Associa­ tion at the Caribbean Junior College, Puerto Rico, in November. Mrs. Giles had been appointed a member o f the Library A d visory Committee which was Louise Jones Giles e s ta b lis h e d b y Dr. Daniel J. Boorstin, Librarian o f Congress, to review the LC operation with an eye toward reorganization. She w as a rec ip ie n t o f the John S. Brubacher Award from the Center for the Study o f Higher Education at the University o f Michigan in 1975 for her outstanding gradu­ ate essay on the history and philosophy o f higher education. Her publications included: Aspects o f the Junior College Field, A Bibliography (AACJC, 1969); “Planning Community College Resource Centers,” American Libraries (January 1971); “Focus on Community C ollege Libraries,” Michigan Librarian (Summer 1971); “The Black Librarian As Change Agent” in What Black Librarians Are Saying, edited by E. J. Josey (Scarecrow Press, 1972); “On the Cut­ ting Edge o f Change” in New Dimensions in Academic Library Service, edited by E. J. Josey (Scarecrow Press, 1973). Edwin C. Giles attended Kent State Uni­ versity. He was graduated from Wayne State University, Detroit, Michigan, with a master o f arts degree in administration. He taught in the school system o f Detroit and for the past few years he was principal o f the Scripps El­ ementary School. Mr. and Mrs. Giles are survived by their daughter, Susan, 19, w ho is a student at City University o f N ew York.
