Mellon F ounda­ tion to fund a project to digi­ tize B razilian g o v e rn m e n t docum ents, store their elec­ tronic versions, an d provide electronic access through the Internet an d CD-ROM for­ mat. The project includes a core set of executive-branch serial docum ents issued by Brazil’s national an d provincial governm ents from in d ep en d e n ce to 1990. Chatham College in Pittsburgh has been aw arded a $250,000 grant from the Richard King Mellon Foundation to be u sed at the discretion o f the president. The grant will be u sed in part to assist Chatham in the expansion and enhance­ m ent of its environm ental studies initiatives, and the program s of the college’s Rachel Carson Institute. C o rn e ll U n iv e r s it y h a s re c e iv e d a $428,000 grant from th e National E ndow m ent for the Hum anities to preserve an d put online o n e o f the w orld's m ost extensive collections o f Icelandic books and o th er publications. The NEH -funded preservation project will include retrospective conversion for 6,000 titles, the creatio n o f 5,980 m icrofilm catalog records, microfilming o f 7,000 volum es, an d conserva­ tion treatm ent o f 3,870 items in the Fiske Ice­ landic Collection, w hose 32,000 titles include virtually every publication issued in Icelandic before 1930. Spring Hill College of Mobile, A lab am a, has received a $49,000 Title II-A grant from the U.S. D epartm ent of Education to autom ate the T hom as Byrne Memorial Library. The University of the Arts in Philadel­ phia has b een aw ard ed a tw o-year $100,000 grant from the Albert M. G reenfield Founda­ tion to im prove autom ation an d electronic in­ form ation access at its University Library. The grant will su p p o rt projects to increase on-site an d rem ote access to the library’s online cata­ log and to convert a core institutional collec­ tion o f visual images to digital format. The University of Notre Dame has been aw arded tw o grants to fund its preservation/ conservation activities. T he N ational E ndow ­ m ent for the Hum anities has granted $652,226 to microfilm 6,000 seriously at-risk volum es o f th e Medieval Institute Library collection. The Charles E. Salis­ bury, Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter for the New York Times, author o f 29 books, a n d s c h o la r o f R u ssia a n d China, have b e e n acq u ired by Columbia University. Included in the collection are original manuscripts, research notes, re­ views, p h o to g rap h s, an d let­ ters; a to t a l o f m o r e th a t 200,000 item s. T he m aterials date from 1930 w h en Salisbury, then 22 an d still a stu d en t at the U niversity o f M innesota, la n d e d a fu ll-tim e jo b w ith United Press in St. Paul at $30 a w eek. Published n ew sp ap er articles, notes, an d co rrespon­ dence chronicle his early years in journalism an d his career o f H a rriso n over 26 y ears w ith th e New York Times, beginning in 1949 as M oscow b u ­ reau chief. Over 2 5 0 Edwardian novels, written be­ tw een 1901 an d 1915, have b e e n acquired by the Fales Library at N ew York University. T he newly acq u ired novels do cu m en t the p o p u lar fiction o f the period, representing th e diversity of contem porary them es an d ap p ro ach es to the genre. Included are detective novels, historical rom ances, rom ances, regional or dialect nov­ els, an d realist novels. W om en authors are es­ pecially w ell rep resen ted in this acquisition. The personal collection of Dr. Thomas M. D av ies Jr., d ire c to r o f San D ie g o State University’s (SDSU) C enter for Latin American Studies, has b e e n b e q u e a th e d to the SDSU Li­ brary. T h e collection o f som e 10,000 titles of Peruvian a n d Latin A m erican b o o k s an d serials w as acq u ired b y D avies in his career as a Latin American historian specializing in Peru. Nearly 7,500 items w ere w ritten in o r ab o u t Peru, sev­ eral h u n d re d o f w hich are quite rare an d are not h eld b y o th e r academ ic libraries in th e U.S. Four im p o rtan t vo lu m e s h a v e been acquired by th e M arylandia & Rare B ooks D e­ partm ent at th e University o f Maryland, Col­ lege Park (UMCP). Markham an d Jefferries’s The Citizen a n d Countryman ’s Experienced Farrier is the second edition (1797) o f the earliest Ameri­ can publication d ev o ted to th e selection, care, a n d racing o f horses. T hom as Jefferson’s Notes on the State o f Virginia; with Appendices—Com­ plete w as th e first edition o f this w ork printed in the South in 1800. The first edition w as said to have had so m e in f lu e n c e d u rin g th e French Revolution w h en Jeffer­ son circulated it during his stay in Paris (1784– 1789). A tran­ script o f J o h n P eter Z enger’s trial for libel in 1734 has also b e e n acquired. This landm ark case established th e principle o f freedom of the press in the A m erican c o lo n ies. G reene believed strongly in th e abil­ ity o f th e unconscious to w o rk o u t problem s w ith his writing. H e w as m eticulous in his ef­ forts to record his dream s, carefully indexing each volum e o f his diaries, noting major them es a n d im ages. T h e c o r r e s p o n d e n c e b e tw e e n G reene a n d his literary agent show s G reen e’s involvem ent w ith th e business of publishing. A collection of p h ysiatry books belong­ ing to Dr. H erm an J. Flax has b e e n acquired by th e Tompkins-M cCaw Library an d th e D epart­ m ent o f Physical M edicine an d Rehabilitation at Virginia C om m onw ealth University. T he col­ lection, assem bled over a p erio d o f 35 years, includes very rare an d old m aterials, such as an Aetii Medici pub lish ed in Basel in 1542 and H ieronym i M ercurialis’s De Arte Gymnastica, p u b lish ed in 1573, as w ell as nu m ero u s cur­ rent research materials, such as a stroke recov­ ery guide from 1992.
