CONFERENCE NOTES r• The R e s e a r c h C o m m i t t e e s o f the Libra Education Division o f A L A and o f the Associ­ ation o f American Library Schools will co­ sponsor an open program meeting on research in library science at the annual A L A confer­ ence in Kansas City, on W ednesday morning, June 26, at 8:0 0 to 9:30 a . m . John McCrossan, assistant professor o f the department o f library science, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and program chairman, will preside. Directors of three recent library research projects will describe the organiza­ tion, research methods, and results of their work. Mrs. Florence D. Cleary, project director, and Mrs. Ruth Allen, chief investigator, of the College of Education, University o f South Florida, Tampa, will report on “ The Effect o f a Librarian-Centered Reading Guidance Program on the Reading Skills and Habits of Elementary School Pupils.” Haynes McMullen, professor of library sci­ ence, graduate library school, Indiana Uni­ versity, Bloomington, will report on “ The Use o f a Computer in the Study o f American Li­ braries in Existence before 1876.” A computer was used for sorting data, performing simple arithmetic processes, and producing graphs as an aid in the study o f approximately 6800 libraries founded in the United States before 1876. The computer was used because it saved enormous amounts o f time in handling data and eliminated many clerical errors that would have resulted from non-computer meth­ ods. Marina E. Axeen, associate professor, de­ partment of library science, Ball State Univer­ sity, Muncie, Indiana, will report on “ Teach­ ing the Use o f the Library to Undergraduates; An Experimental Comparison o f Computer- Based Instruction and the Conventional L ec­ ture Method.” Tw o groups o f undergraduates were taught an introductory course in library science, one by a computerized program and the other b y the conventional lecture methods. Results o f the two methods were analyzed and compared. A doctoral dissertation at the University o f Illinois.
