C&RL News June 2019 334 And the winners are . . . The official results of the 2019 ACRL elections Karen Munro, associate dean of librar- ies, learning and research services, at Si- mon Fraser University in Burnaby, Brit- ish Columbia, on the traditional, current, and unceded territories of the Squamish, Tsleil-Waututh, Musqueam, and Kwikwe- tlem Nations, is the 82nd president of ACRL. “Stepping into the position of ACRL President feels like starting any big new job: exciting, inspiring, and a little nerve- wracking. As I make this move, I’m grateful for the example set by the many talented, thoughtful, and forward-looking colleagues who have preceded me in this role and in member leadership throughout ACRL—as well as the dedicated and terrific staff who do so much to make the association great. “I’m also thinking about the many mem- bers who are not in formal leadership roles. I see ACRL members grappling everywhere with the key issues of our day—issues of oppression and liberation, and of major technological and economic changes af- fecting our profession. I see members ex- ploring new ways for us to move ourselves and our institutions forward, in conference presentations, peer-reviewed publications, and Twitter threads. I’m inspired by the energy and commitment that so many ACRL members bring to these conversa- tions, regardless of whether they happen formally or informally. “I’m happy to be part of a Board that takes these issues seriously and works hard to address them. I’m proud to have participated in the authentic and in-depth discussions that led the ACRL Board to add a core commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion to the Plan for Excellence. I’m excited to continue discussing big is- sues in academic librarianship and higher education. And I’m grateful to be part of an association that is ready to tackle these challenges openly and with energy. “I look forward to continuing the work of ACRL as President for the next year alongside Lauren, Jon, the Board, ACRL staff, and every contributing and engaged member of the association. Thank you for all you do for our association and our profession.” As president, Munro will preside over the ACRL Board of Directors and ACRL Ex- ecutive Committee, and plan ACRL’s major program at the 2020 ALA Annual Confer- ence. It is quite the honor to serve in this leadership role. I look forward to hearing from more of you who are passionate about our noble profession. Several of you asked about serving on ACRL committees or getting more involved. While I am still learning ACRL governance and the respon- C&RL News June 2019 336 sibilities of a vice-president, I look forward to hearing from you at jon.cawthorne@ wayne.edu. I am particularly interested in how we build on the positive, forward momentum from the wonderful conference in Cleveland, Ohio. I trust, together, we will work to make ACRL’s next conference in Seattle in 2021 the best yet. “No matter what kind of library environ- ment you work in, my interest in hearing from you is sincere, and I welcome your thoughts before, during, and after my time in leadership. This is a momentous, excit- ing, and (some might say) perilous time in our academic, college, and research library profession. While all of us may take time to marvel at the sheer complexity of our information/knowledge/scholarship/ publishing higher education industry, I also love what we do and I know there are many like me who feel the same way.
