It is one of the purposes of this paper to distinguish different epistemological arguments behind distinct uses of robustness analysis in theoretical models. Section 3, drawing on a model in population ecology, I explain how robustness analysis differs from de-idealization. This method of testing whether a result is invariant under different initial assumptions is known as robustness analysis.
