It is one of the purposes of this paper to distinguish different epistemological arguments behind distinct uses of robustness analysis in theoretical models. Section 3, drawing on a model in population ecology, I explain how robustness analysis differs from de-idealization. This method of testing whether a result is invariant under different initial assumptions is known as robustness analysis. As an example of robustness analysis, consider Schelling's segregation model different initial positions provides a robust result, which does not depend on one specific assumption, i.e. a particular representation of the distribution of the individuals 2) to derive theoretical results from models with different assumptions; 3) to measure physical entities invariance of a model's results under different assumptions.
