826 I "The Baron is one of the most amusing detectives we have encountered in a long, long time." n. y. times. This book continues the adventures of that remarkable crea- ture, the Baron von Kaz, who was introduced to an enthusi- astic public in The Ticking Terror Murders. Here we see the prodigious Baron with his conceit and naivete, his old-world sophistication and foolhardy bravery, and his great intuition, facing the "hissing death" in Hawaii. It began with murder on a Honolulu-bound liner, but the truly amazing aspects of the mystery did not become apparent un- til after the debarkation. It was then that the Baron received the Green Lion Jade and met the hissing death for the second time. He also built castles in the sand, with almost fatal results, was kidnaped and rescued only to find himself in a worse predicament, and made the acquaintance of the thirty- pound book with the lead corners. Finally he tapped a Japa- nese agricultural inspector on the head with a champagne botde, went for a wild ride on a Kona "nightingale," and learned about the Rock of the Shining Water and the burial place of Prince Puakini. And in the old lava tunnel the Baron and Caryl Miquet, a lady of many parts, faced the hissing death for the last time and only the presence of the Baron's boon companion, his green umbrella, saved the day. Even so, the Baron ended up in a hospital bed, but it was from this same bed that he produced the astounding surprise that gives this exciting story its dramatic ending.
