In Memoriam Bruce Edward Wilson Bruce Edward Wilson, a founder of the Department of Political Science at Cali- fornia State Polytechnic University, Pomona, died suddenly on January 12, 1984 at the age of 5 7 . The academic career of Professor Wilson centered in his passionate defense of the individual's unfettered freedom t o choose and the hallmark of that freedom: total deliverance from constraint and compulsion. Bruce Wilson's political philosophy was epitomized in his remark that " I n societies where property rights have been suppressed other rights have almost inevitably been adversely af- fected as w e l l . " In demand as a public speaker on First Amendment issues, he was a true libertarian. Wilson was equally dedicated to the fur- therance of social justice, especially in areas of race relations and world peace. His concerns were evidenced in his pro- 2 9 7 People In Political Science fessional capacity through his course on race relations and the law, and in his per- sonal life through his activities on behalf of the Mennonite Central Committee. Recipient of the baccalaureate degree from the University of Miami, and the M.A. and Ph.D. from the Claremont Graduate School, Dr. Wilson taught at California State Polytechnic College, Pomona, from 1963. In the 1960s he was a mainstay in what are now the departments of History, Political Science and Social Sciences. In anticipation of the transformation of the college to university status, Bruce was a founder in 1969 of the Department of Political Science, serving as its chair on several occasions. Professor Wilson specialized in public law, American government and politics, and research methods. An authority on computer applications in political science and department coordinator for student advisement, including pre-law advising to students from a variety of majors, Bruce Wilson's contributions to the University were literally invaluable. Bruce is survived by his wife, four grown children and a grandson, Daryl Bruce, born two days after his grandfather's death. John H.
