BOD is a measure of the quantity of oxygen used by aerobic microorganisms (need molecular oxygen for living) in the oxidation of organic matter present in a given water sample at certain temperatures over a specific time period. The rate of oxygen consumption and therefore BOD is affected by a number of variables: temperature, pH, the presence of certain kinds of microorganisms, and the type of organic and inorganic material in the water (Davis and Cornwell, 2012; Weiner and Matthews, 2003) .
