We therefore aimed to describe the epidemiology of PeV in the first 2 years of life by the means of an unselected communitybased birth cohort whose recruitment coincided with the first reported outbreak of severe PeV-A3 disease in Australia [5, 19] , and to investigate the risk factors and symptoms associated with acquiring PeV in these young children.
