Since the end of February of this year, global health is being threatened by the emergence of a new infectious disease, severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), caused by a novel coronavirus [1] [2] [3] . However, the most immediate concerns to the health authorities of Hong Kong and mainland China are to contain the spread of the disease and to reduce the mortality of those SARS patients who succumb to acute respiratory failure.
