As a country, it has perhaps the largest influenza sentinel surveillance system in the world, including active testing for influenza, and it was the first country to implement highly successful NPIs against SARS-CoV-2, giving it the best opportunity to see a possible change in influenza before the expected seasonal decline. To know what might happen with influenza this coming fall and winter, we need to know what has happened prospectively in southern hemisphere countries, especially those that like the US have used fewer NPI's and used them with less rigor and, correspondingly, been less successful in controlling SARS-CoV-2 transmission.
