Figure 1 summarizes the daily progression in the cumulative number of COVID-19 positive subjects and in the incidence of deaths related to COVID-19 in southern and northern Italy, since the start of the outbreak. On the national "lockdown" day (March 12), in northern Italy there was a total of 14,335 infected patients and 997 COVID-19 related deaths. Following the COVID-19 outbreak, the local Apulian government firstly increased the number of available beds in the units of intensive care, pneumology, and infectious diseases across the Region.
