The outbreak of avian influenza A H5N1 virus human infections in Hong Kong in 1997, with 18 cases and six deaths [6] , serves as another excellent example to illustrate the role of Chinese wet-markets in the emergence of zoonotic severe respiratory viral infections (Fig. 4) .
