GSS, most FFI, and some cases of CJD occur as dominant inherited diseases, associated with mutations in the gene for the prion protein. The pattern of symptoms associated with a particular TSE may vary, however, depending in part on how the disease was contracted; on the source of the infecting agent; and on the nature of mutations in the prion protein.
