The most important defensive reflex of the airways is cough, which, together with the mucociliary transport system, forms the main mechanism for cleaning of the respiratory tract (Korpas and Nosalova, 1991; Chung and Chang, 2002; Belvisi and Geppetti, 2004) . Although respiratory-modulated receptors play an important role in the function of the upper airways, they are not generally viewed as a primary factor in the elicitation of cough reflex.
