Myelinating Schwann cells progress through a proliferative "premyelinating" stage, characterized by transient expression of suppressed cAMP-inducible Pou-domain transcription factor (SCIP), followed by a "promyelinating" GalC-positive stage, becoming associated with a single axon in the process.
