Further compelling evidence for a role for avenacins in plant defence came from the mutagenesis of a diploid avenacinproducing oat species ( Avena strigosa ), and the demonstration that avenacin-de fi cient mutants (isolated by screening for reduced root fl uorescence) have enhanced susceptibility to a range of soil-borne fungal pathogens including G.
