We first assessed the ability of RNA-seq and PVG PCR to detect known respiratory pathogens using specimens from children with CAP (n = 63) and asymptomatic control (n = 52) subjects in whom viral or atypical bacterial pathogens had been detected using the EPIC study protocol. We validated RNA-seq and PVG PCR methods to detect known respiratory pathogens by testing specimens using both methods from children with CAP (n = 63) and asymptomatic control subjects (n = 52) in whom viral or atypical bacterial pathogens had been detected using the EPIC study protocol.
