Evidence before this study We reviewed the single study of autopsy in a COVID-19 positive patient by Z Xu and colleagues, published in this journal, and reports of pathology from severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) coronavirus and similar viral infections by J Nicholls. Previous evidence [10] [11] [12] [13] [14] reports viral infection causing activation of both maladaptive cytokine pathways and a platelet response, and our findings suggest that these immune functions might be related to severe forms of COVID-19. We do not have evidence of direct infection of megakaryocytes by SARS-CoV-2, but the abundance of these cells in the lungs at autopsy is probably related to the abundance of small, sometimes platelet-rich thrombi, and foci of haemorrhage. ./cache/cord-301779-y07xjnpe.txt ./txt/cord-301779-y07xjnpe.txt
