Interestingly NL63, an hCoV that also uses angiotensin converting enzyme 2 as the host receptor, but typically causes mild upper respiratory disease, was the cause of a cluster of severe pediatric pneumonias in China in 2018, during which half of the patients were identified with viruses containing a specific substitution in the spike glycoprotein that enhanced binding to and entry via angiotensin converting enzyme 2 (4).
