While many mechanisms possibly contribute to spread of the infection, such as lymphatic circulation, we hypothesize that a major driver of the abrupt deterioration several days after the initial infection is caused by a sudden shift in the spread of virus-laden bioaerosols through the airways to many different regions of the lungs from the initial site of infection. This shift of airflow pattern distributes virus-laden bioaersols to other, even distant, parts of the lungs (Figure 1c) .
