A recent large prospective study in Hong Kong identified both acute and chronic HEV-C1 infection in both immunocompetent and immunocompromised patients [24] . There is significant heterogeneity in the clinical picture of acute infection in these areas; only a small minority of patients present with typical viral hepatitis as described above. One of the most important public health challenges related to acute hepatitis E infection, which most commonly occurs in developing countries, is the excess morbidity and mortality seen among pregnant women (Table 1 ).
