Although most authors since the 1960s have advocated the use of glucocorticoids to avert the need for surgical intervention, several series note that, despite steroids, 40-88% of patients with airway obstruction required tonsillectomy (7, 9) . Historically, epiglottitis has been associated primarily with Haemophilus influenzae infections, typically occurring in children aged 3 months to 5 years, with a peak incidence between 1 and 3 years, and characterized by a rapid onset of fever, drooling and stridor (47) .
