Viral acute respiratory infections (ARIs) in pediatric outpatients represent a significant burden on emergency departments (EDs) and the patients' families, mainly during influenza seasons, being associated with around 20% of all deaths in pre-school children worldwide, with 90% of these deaths due to pneumonia.
