The majority of these pathogens cause upper respiratory tract infections more often than overt pneumonias. In the following sections the main bacterial agents causing atypical respiratory tract infections are discussed, with a special emphasis on the latest bacterial addition, Chlamydia pneumoniae. Respiratory tract infections caused by Chlamydia psittaci are directly dependent on exposure to birds carrying the pathogen. The role that Chlamydia pneumoniae plays in other acute respiratory tract infections is still under study. It should also be attempted in Chlamydia pneumoniae infections in order to obtain information on disease associations and strain variability of this newly recognized pathogen.
